We are thrilled to share the groundbreaking announcement made by Governor Maura Healey and Lieutenant Governor Kim Driscoll last week. A historic expansion of financial aid, the MASSGrant Plus Expansion program, is set to transform the educational landscape for approximately 25,000 students attending the state’s public colleges and universities. With nearly $62 million in new program funding, MASSGrant Plus Expansion is a game-changer for students, covering the total cost of tuition and fees for Pell Grant-eligible individuals. As an added bonus, students will also receive an additional allowance of up to $1,200 for books and supplies. This transformative change is not just a number; it represents the removal of financial barriers for countless ambitious students. As we celebrate this remarkable initiative, it's worth noting that as many as 2,000 students currently enrolled at Northern Essex could directly benefit from this substantial expansion. Kudos to Governor Maura Healey, Lieutenant Governor Kim Driscoll, and all those involved in making education more accessible and equitable. To be eligible for a Federal Pell Grant in 2024–2025, a student must meet the following general requirements: 
 * Be enrolled in an undergraduate program at a non-foreign institution 
 * Not have earned a bachelor's, graduate, or professional degree 
 * Have financial need 
 Other factors that the federal government considers when determining eligibility include: Family size, Tax filing status, Federal poverty guidelines, Whether the student is a dependent or independent, and Whether the student lives in a single-parent household. 

Students can apply for a Pell Grant by submitting a Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) form each year they're in school. The FAFSA form asks questions about income, family size, and other factors. Schools use the information on the FAFSA to determine eligibility and the amount of the grant. Edit: The repeal of this policy is not a good thing. Don't be fooled. Louisiana has consistently been #1 in the nation for FAFSA completions by eligible high school seniors, and we have left billions of dollars *less* on the table than states that don’t have a universal FAFSA policy. Once students realize that postsecondary education can be affordable after they’ve qualified for different types of aid (a lot of it being free money), they’re more likely to enroll in a degree or credential program, which helps the entire community and economy in the long run. On Wednesday, this law was repealed, and Lousiana seniors will no longer have to complete the FAFSA as a graduation requirement, which is a grave mistake, in my opinion. The Cowen Institute’s Executive Director, Dr. Amanda Kruger Hill, Ed.D., weighed in as a member of the original state FAFSA policy working group. I encourage every eligible future college student to complete the FAFSA. You’d be amazed by what a Pell Grant could pay for or how it’s submission opens doors for other federal, state, and institutional aid. Stay focused. Counselors, keep doing an amazing job.
