What do you think occupational therapists do? Chances are you can think of one or two areas of practice based on your own experience. In reality, the options are endless- wherever people need support to engage in meaningful and purposeful occupations (the things they want to do, need to do or are expected to do) then there is a role for occupational therapy. This week University of Canberra students heard from Anita Brown-Major from https://lnkd.in/gHWttAfp about how to acknowledge all members of our community, regardless of their age, ability, background, or body as sexual beings - exploring our sexual needs and identity is an occupation. This was followed by a talk by occupational therapists Tasmin Lewis and Tizzie Diamond- Gatoff who work at https://lnkd.in/gBs5Vs-X with people at risk of coming in contact with the justice system to empower girls and women to recognise their unique strengths and abilities and create opportunities that will see them thrive through occupational participation. It is all about challenging our students to think beyond the needs of the system, to instead focus on the needs of the communities they work within #occupationaltherapy #occupationaljustice

Working as a team is crucial when it comes to supporting children and young people in reaching their goals. Children's development in Occupational Therapy involves a collaborative approach which can have a positive impact. By working as a team, we allow individuals to have support in all areas from a range of different people; their needs are being met and holistic approaches are used. Having everyone involved means that we identify strengths and needs as we go through the process and can adapt as needed. Consistency is needed across settings to achieve goals so by having open communication, we are also trying to maintain this consistency. Children and young people with Special Educational Needs and Disabilities learn from watching as well as ‘doing’, it’s beneficial as they can observe people in different environments not just in one setting. Everyone needs to celebrate our children and young people, by having this team approach, this is possible! Develop your confidence as an Occupational Therapist and join a supportive network. 💻 https://lnkd.in/ewhKJEtW 📩 [email protected] ☎️ 020 3538 8337 #OccupationalTherapists #OccupationalTherapyJobs #PrivatePractice

Our goal as Occupational Therapists allow young people to access opportunities with the support they need to fully engage. Our goals are often functional and are set by the client, which means that are motivated to achieve them. Having a learning disability shouldn't put your young person at a disadvantage, they should be able to access opportunities the same as everyone else. But the research tells us that this isn't the case, they often don't have the opportunity to gain employment or social experiences which can lead to feelings of isolation and loneliness. ❤️ Support us to spread the word by reacting to this post! #OccupationalTherapist #LearningDisabilities #FunctionalGoals

Market research question for therapy agency owners who place school-based occupational therapists in school districts: What types of training and preparation do you provide to your new OTs prior to their start in a school district? This would include new grads, OTs changing work settings, OTs transferring from another agency and OTs returning to work after an extended leave of absence. I sincerely appreciate your input!
