If you have any interest in women's sports, I invite you to learn more about ultra running. The world of ultra running is small but growing. I'm not an ultra runner (by any means!) but I follow the stories of races. Why? Lots of reasons. The race locations are often jaw droppingly beautiful. The resolve and dedication of the runners is awe inspiring. And the growing success of women - who compete directly with men - is inspiring and growing. Spend a few minutes reading about recent races and records and you'll see women's names everywhere. They're setting records. Finishing races that are practically impossible, even for men. And they keep getting better. It's a sport where even the experts are unsure where the upper limits are. They don't know how far, fast, or hard people can go yet. And they aren't sure if women or men are better at it because the women are showing up in bigger numbers, setting faster and further records, and winning more races. These races are not just long. They're harrowing. They cover incredibly challenging and technical terrain. They require navigation skills. They're in the dark, in the rain, in the snow, and in the sun. Often all in the same race. It's not enough to be fast. It's not enough to be strong. It's not enough to be well supported. It requires almost an incalculable dedication to the sport and yourself to achieve success. And apparently it's absolutely addictive. I'll close out by sharing to articles that I think anyone with any interest in emerging sports or women's sports should read. These articles left me inspired enough to say, I have to share this. I have to tell people what this amazing sport and incredible athletes are doing. 🥇 Jasmine Paris became the first woman to complete one of the world's toughest races this weekend, The Barkley Marathon. 😤 Only 20 people have ever finished it, since it was extended to 100 miles in 1989. Mostly the news every year is, no one completed it. It is a race of legend in running circles. 💡What does this mean for us, on a day to day? 🏔 Whatever mountain you're climbing, whatever challenge you have in front of you, on the other side of hard, is where you find growth. 📈 On a performance curve, that doesn't mean having to push ourselves to strain every day. Our event/organization, The Women's Cycling Summit (WCS), is partnered with the Breck Epic(Michael McCormack) stage race to increase fairness and participation for female cyclists. This year, we are offering free entries to all pro women, and many other benefits. Last year, along with the WCS, we had a 112% increase in the Breck Epic. For 2024, we are projecting a 455% increase in participation with our model, and it's working. (If you are a professional woman and want to apply, head over to breckepic.com and click any of the header images for the application) Our approach is what researcher Prilleltensky Isaac calls mattering. Allowing women to feel valued and add value to our sport is essential. Distributing resources to empower women, along with creating an environment to have a voice and choice, is crucial. We are excited to see how our vision plays out this year and to scale it for 2024! I'm excited that my schooling for my Master's in Applied Positive Psychology is giving me language and tools to further build our vision. Mike and I make a great team, and a prime example of what male allyship looks like to empower women. When we put our heads together with our ideas and events, we created space for women to matter. I hope other organizations and races start thinking outside the box like we did. At WCS, part of our mission will also be to guide organizations to improve fairness, power, and participation for women. Currently sat on the stationary trainer 🚴 watching the Armagh International 5K. Apart from it’s not, is it? The men’s race is 5K, whilst the women’s is a 3K (a quick look at previous results suggests it’s always been this way). Yesterday was International Women in Sport day & I can’t help but think it leaves a bitter taste for the women’s international race to be almost half the distance of the men’s international race. For context, Armagh5k is one of the world’s most revered running road races, with some of Europe’s best runners descending on this small Northern Irish town every February. Credit where credit is due to the organisers for keeping this event running during trying times & also running a livestream. I appreciate that the reality of running events is far more difficult than it appears on paper. 👏 Perhaps there is good reason for the women’s event being 3K (selection criteria for a championship event, perhaps?), in which case I apologise for calling this out; but I can’t see one personally. It’d be great to see the women’s race be run over the billed 5K in 2025. Why not make it the main event on alternate years by running the men’s race first next year, too? 👀 Be interesting to hear my network’s thoughts on this!👇 #equality #womeninsport #armagh5k #athletics

Tribird! Where did that come from? Have you ever wondered where the name "Tribird" for my business came from? It all started during the London Triathlon. I had set myself a target for the 10k run portion of the race, and contrary to the advice I now give, I placed all my hopes on achieving that goal. Fortunately, I exceeded my expectations that day and for the first time, truly enjoyed the run (though biking remains my favorite). My approach to guiding athletes now I'm a coach, is to enjoy the journey, just as I did. I encourage them to set bronze, silver, and gold goals for each race. The bronze goal represents the minimum outcome they’d be happy with, silver is a middle ground, and gold is the ultimate result. This way, they have multiple opportunities for positive outcomes. If the results aren’t what they hoped for, I emphasise the importance of reflecting on the experience to extract lessons and areas for improvement. Viewing setbacks as opportunities for growth ensures that even less-than-ideal outcomes contribute to their development. So back to my story - My friend, who had finished the race before me, mistakenly thought I hadn't reached my goal and was bracing for my disappointment. Instead, when he found out I had succeeded, he was thrilled and relieved. In his excitement, he called me "Tribird" and even bought me a T-shirt on the spot, with "Tribird" printed on a velcro panel (yes, the expo offered customisable printing). Years later, when I was brainstorming names for my business, Tribird naturally came to mind. Tribird is me, and Tribirdsport Coaching is my company. Do you have a nickname?
