What is your WHY? The concept of WHY is a theory developed and well documented by Simon Sinek. I’m almost embarrassed to admit it isn’t one I had come across until participating in the Goldman Sachs #GS10KSB programme last year. The programme got me thinking a lot about my personal and business ‘why’. ‘Start With Why’ is the concept of explaining your purpose and the reason you exist and behave as you do. Delving into this concept allowed me to determine dbstructural Ltd's purpose statement: dbstructural exist to do engineering differently. I will share more on this in future posts. More importantly, it allowed me to determine my own personal why. Why did I go into business, create a company and take on all the highs and lows that are associated with that? The answer to this is ultimately to be a better Dad. I never wanted to be the Dad that was never around, never at home, always working long hours and not seeing my children between weekends. Setting up dbstructural allowed me to take control of this. I will admit that at times it has been a challenge to fulfill this purpose, but most recently I feel like I am winning! Especially today, surprising my Wife and youngest Son at his toddlers football class and seeing his joy light up the room makes it all worthwhile! How do you commit to continuous #personaldevelopment and #professionalgrowth? For the past few months, I began a growth journey through the Goldman Sachs 10,000 Small Businesses - Baltimore program. From an individual development perspective, I have already grown immensely from internal reflection, expertise from talented facilitators and supportive business advisors, and interactions with my cohort 21 peeps - shout out to my table group (affectionately known as Blazing Phoenix Ventures) – Cassandra Lacey, Danielle Gittens, P.E., CCM, Sophia Tade, Layton Johnson, Erica M. MBA Journey - One Year Done! I cannot believe I am already halfway through my MBA program at Gies College of Business - University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign. 😀 It's been an amazing learning experience, working on multiple case studies to understand the microeconomic and macroeconomic elements that feed into business decisions. On Friday, December 15, 2023, I graduated from the prestigious Goldman Sachs 10,000 Small Businesses program with Cohort 36! And with the honor of being chosen to be a Goldman Sachs Ambassador for my cohort. If you know, you know. It's competitive for a reason…the investment Goldman Sachs places in us is beyond what I can capture here. After 15 weeks of perseverance and commitment, even in times when I thought: how am I going to get through this intense, accelerated program that has me rethinking everything every week…I am here to say anything that I say will be an understatement. This wasn't just a professional or personal thing. It became a spiritual thing. I didn't just find an incredible cohort of entrepreneurs like me. I found, as one of my cohorts said, human beings that feel like distant cousins. I wasn't just inspired by former scholars who came to speak, I realized many were already in my community living the promise and goal of this program. To say we had outstanding business advisors, professors and panelists and resources each week with great learnings is small talk. We had leaders that poured into us with full intent to see us succeed (proud to say some were already friends and a Soror!). In my community for life. To say I am leaving with a growth plan that has me excited is an insult. I have all I need in a holistic, dynamic, exponential way that's taking my business to every level of possibility I have imagined, will continue to imagine. If you know you know. I have connection, community, and My experience was invaluable. Anybody that says otherwise….just didn't do it right. It's not meant to be an easy, check the box. It's meant to be a process for a lifetime of growth in economic value, social/community value, and personal value. Stay open, stay curious, stay committed to learning and improving. ~3 months ago, I enrolled in Goldman Sachs 10,000 small businesses program. Here’s how it’s all going lately… → Been learning like a madman → Met lots of incredible people → Expanded my skillset X3 times As we are only left with 3 sessions, I want to celebrate & acknowledge everything that we have already done through the program. The course helped me see the potential in the economic growth and job creation of small businesses across the USA through greater access to business education, financial capital, and business support services. In addition to the classroom experience, we were also doing 6-8 hours of out-of-class activities each week. These assignments helped improve our own business by putting the whole theory into practice. (Launched Multifamily 101 last week!!) Next session, we will be pitching our business growth plan to the whole audience. What another tremendous experience at Wharton Executive Education. In the Corporate Valuation Program, we took a deep dive into topics including but not limited to cost of capital, capital structures, DCF and APV valuation, M&A, and LBOs. Thank you to my peers, professors, and the Exec Ed team for making the experience so meaningful. Oh… and if you’re an industry executive considering a move to continue your business education, the seamless accessibility to cheese steaks should not be overlooked.

I’m not allowed to take on anything new for the rest of the year. It’s time for me to apply what I’ve learned. I’m in my implementation season. I’m in the season of implement, build, integrate, embody. I was in the season of gathering information, learning, gaining knowledge. And I’ve learned so much so far this year! However comma, to be in a perpetual state of learning, with no implementation, is avoidance of failure. Implementing means trial and error. Error means failure. And sometimes that’s what perpetual learning, without implementation, is about. Avoiding failure. (Read that again). So yeah, for the rest of the year, I’ll be implementing what I learned: from the Goldman Sachs program, from NYU Business School professors, my NYU business advisor and my business coach. It’s time to implement the plan I created, to work with 5 figure and 6 figure clients. So far, since March, I’ve raised my prices and already sold several $10,000 offers. I’m in the season of implement, build, integrate, embody. Stay tuned! 💪🏾
