The Cultivation’s values that I talk about aren’t just a blanket statement of “Legacy” The holistic expression of a farm's unique potential is it’s “Legacy”. If it’s built to be sustainable with a long term vision it will continue to have a Legacy. In biodynamics, we look at each farm as an integrated whole and a living organism in its own right. It’s values should be rooted in the agricultural methods and practices of Regenerative, Organic, Sustainable, Holistic, Ecological , and Ethical. It’s fundamental purpose should be ingrained within a spiritual and responsible approach. It’s rewards aren’t just measured in dollars. A delicate balancing between Mother Nature and the Farmer. A Farmer should always cultivate a fascinated interest in the Flora and Fauna , the Wildlife, the Cycles of the Moon , the Rythms of nature, and the Circle of life. A Farmer is the backbone of a community. Together, we're not just countering but rewriting the narrative set by extractive industries. Join in. There’s a lot of life in our soil. Just one teaspoon of healthy soil contains billions of microorganisms, which is great for biodiversity 🌾 If one of your 2024 resolutions is to be better to our planet, consider starting with soil. One way to do that is to support those who are working to improve soil health (and build a more resilient ecosystem) through regenerative agricultural practices. When was the last time you visited a wetland? Did you know that charming water voles, European eels, and curlews are endangered species? I recently collaborated with Cate Grundy, PhD, of Friendly Fox Designs to create an educational video for her outdoor board systems. When placed in environmentally important areas, these boards allow people to access information and videos via their mobile phones to learn about the environmental challenges we face and the positive steps being taken to address them. Static wooden, non-interactive, and non-inclusive boards are so 80s ;-) One inspiring example of environmental change is the Adur River in Sussex, where 27 farmers and land managers are working to revive floodplains, increase biodiversity, and improve water quality. Their efforts include re-meandering rivers, restoring floodplains, removing barriers and embankments, creating new habitats, and enhancing soil health through regenerative farming techniques. This video provides a brief insight into the species being lost and the efforts being made to address the problem.

It holds the memories of crops like maize, wheat, and rice, which civilizations have cultivated for thousands of years, shaping both human society and the earth itself. As we explore the layers of soil, we uncover traces of life, both risen and fallen, and fields once fertile and abundant. I’m a big believer in harnessing the power of nature to solve environmental challenges. What I’ve found spending my entire career working in conservation & media is that oftentimes the best solution involves simplifying a problem by looking to nature as inspiration. Hands down, the best example I can think of is the Three Sisters. Let me explain. The 3 Sisters is a form of Indigenous agriculture that involves the practice of companion planting corn, beans, and squash for mutual benefit. The corn provides a sturdy structure for the beans to climb, the beans add nitrogen to the soil, and the squash suppresses weeds and supports water retention. Each plant supports the growth of another and results in higher yields than if each plant was grown alone. The relationship between the sisters is rooted in layers of reciprocity. As the individual plant flourishes, so does the whole garden. And we can totally use this to interweave Indigenous knowledge and western science for climate solutions. Ultimately, it’s all about learning to view climate challenges more holistically as catalyst for innovation - leading with #culture, #community, and #stewardship of our beautiful country. 👨🌾Rural and Urban Divide: A Myth? 🏙️ According to new research from Massey University and Our Land and Water National Science Challenge, the perceived deep divide between rural and urban communities in New Zealand may not be as accurate as commonly believed. The study found that instead of a divide, there is a rich diversity of opinions about farming, and both rural and urban dwellers appreciate the role of farmers in producing food and caring for the environment. The research, which surveyed and interviewed over 1300 people, reveals that concerns such as rising food costs, environmental impact, and government interference are shared by both groups. However, there is a need for more authentic communication and storytelling about farming, using facts, science and highlighting sustainable practices to reduce environmental harm.
