Congratulations to the incredible 2023 Robert Wood Johnson Foundation #CultureOfHealthPrize winners! 🎈 It’s inspiring to see what is possible when communities come together to address structural racism and other forms of structural discrimination—even if they don’t use those terms—so everyone can reach their best health and wellbeing in the place they call home. Every community is unique, but all of these Prize communities are building and sustaining a Culture of Health through deep cross-sector partnerships; efforts led by those directly affected by inequities; and lasting solutions to improve community conditions that influence health and wellbeing, such as changes to policy and the built environment. Achieving health justice means digging up the common roots of these injustices — including racism, classism, and sexism— and making sure our policies are oriented toward an equitable opportunity for health for all. The AAMC Center for Health Justice is a space to come out of our siloes and work together. We cannot achieve health equity by working alone. The AAMC is committed to partnering with other organizations, community leaders, and community members to develop this important effort. We build authentic collaborations and an aligned agenda for better health, ensuring all voices in a community are heard. We believe that the process — how we work with communities — is just as important as the product that comes out of this work. That is what will make a difference. Taken separately, we are diverse sectors and individuals. Healthy Black Families - Episode Two: Health Investments for Berkeley The possibilities for improving health justice and equity are vast when there is an authentic partnership and inclusive engagement of community based advocates and organizers. Health starts in homes, workplaces, neighborhoods, and communities. Social determinants of health include factors like socioeconomic status, education, neighborhood and physical environment, employment, and social support networks, as well as access to health care. Addressing social determinants of health is important for improving and reducing longstanding disparities in health.   Policies and practices in non-health sectors have impacts on health and health equity. For example, the availability and accessibility of public transportation affects access to employment, affordable healthy foods, health care, and other important drivers of health and wellness.   Although there has been significant progress recognizing and addressing social determinants of health, many challenges remain. The Healthy Chicago Equity Zones initiative is part of Healthy Chicago 2025, the City’s community health improvement plan that outlines strategies to close this racial life expectancy gap. New Hanover County Health and Human Services recognizes the profound significance of Juneteenth, a day commemorating the emancipation of enslaved African Americans and celebrating freedom and resilience. This historic day reminds us of the ongoing struggle for justice, equality, and true freedom in our society.   Juneteenth not only marks a pivotal moment in history but also highlights the enduring impact of systemic disparities and inequities, including those within the healthcare system. The legacy of slavery and subsequent racial discrimination has contributed to persistent health disparities that disproportionately affect Black communities. As we honor Juneteenth, we also bring attention to the importance of health equity and the need to address these disparities.   Health equity ensures that everyone, regardless of race, socioeconomic status, or background, has access to quality healthcare. This principle is at the heart of our mission at New Hanover County Health and Human Services. We are dedicated to confronting and eliminating the systemic barriers that prevent equitable access to healthcare for all.   James Baldwin once said, "Not everything that is faced can be changed, but nothing can be changed until it is faced." This powerful quote inspires us to confront the systemic issues that contribute to health disparities and to work tirelessly towards a more equitable healthcare system.   On this Juneteenth, let us reaffirm our commitment to health equity. The influence of Juneteenth reminds us of the progress that has been made and the work that still needs to be done. Today, January 16, 2024, we stand united for the National Day of Racial Healing, a crucial initiative established by the W.K. Kellogg Foundation. This day calls for healing, unity, and action against the divisive impact of racism and systemic practices. The COVID-19 pandemic revealed disparities rooted in structural and systemic racism, affecting Black, Indigenous, and non-Hispanic white communities. With 246 public health entities declaring racism a public health emergency, including 21 state health departments, 94 county health departments, and 149 city declarations, progress is underway. Yet, challenges persist, from insufficient medical equipment to limited staffing and poor infrastructure affecting outreach to isolated communities. This year, NACDD urges members and partners nationwide to engage in healing activities, events, or strategies that address racism, bias, inequity, injustice, and social justice. Our commitment to racial equity began in 2020 with the Racial Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion (REDI) Alliance, striving to build and leverage a diverse and inclusive workforce and workplace. In 2017, NACDD released the Moving to Institutional Equity Tool: A tool to Address Racial Equity in Public Health, increasing discussion about public health’s role in racial equity and discussing why this is important to public health. Over the past several months, our department has embarked on a transformative journey to revamp our mission, vision, and values. This collective effort was driven by a desire to better reflect our current work and aspirations for the future. We engaged in thoughtful discussions, gathered diverse perspectives, and collaboratively shaped a new framework that embodies our dedication to community health and empowerment. Our Mission: Community Health Worker Initiatives (CHWI) aims to support community-based health initiatives that build community power and improve health outcomes. Our Vision: CHWI envisions achieving health equity and social justice across New Mexico’s diverse communities through empowerment, education, and a community health lens. Our Values: - Equity - Advocacy - Compassion - Integrity - Community Care These revised statements not only guide our current initiatives but also pave the way for future endeavors. They underscore our commitment to fostering community power, achieving health equity, and promoting social justice. As we move forward, we are excited to continue working towards these goals, guided by our shared values and collective vision.
