Climate change has become a major concern in recent years, with agriculture being a significant contributor to greenhouse gas emissions, particularly methane. Methane is produced by livestock during enteric fermentation and from manure management, and it is a potent greenhouse gas that has a significant impact on global warming. As the demand for food continues to rise, the agricultural sector must find sustainable ways to reduce methane production. This could be achieved through implementing more efficient farming practices, such as improved feed formulations for livestock, better manure management, and increasing the use of renewable energy sources on farms. The Financial Times recently called into question the climate benefits of soil carbon sequestration. The premise of the article is true: soil carbon removals are complex. But what climate mitigation tactic isn't? And does complexity mean we shouldn't do it? We believe the #agriculture and #climate industries are smarter than that. Our response to recent criticisms of soil carbon’s role in climate adaptation. But I want to highlight this post for another reason. I have always been uncomfortable with the norms in corporate communications where the comms team rarely gets acknowledgement of their contributions to company thought leadership (looking at you, C-Suite). My comms colleagues would always explain to me that this is just how corporate communications works, but the sound of their voices indicated they wished it weren’t this way. When I came to Regrow I wanted to change this, at least in our world. I made my case to leadership and Anastasia Volkova, PhD said we would work this out. Now we have published our first content where my wonderful comms colleague Elleni Paulson is properly recognized for her work. Her partnership makes my words and ideas better and the contributions of our communications team is critical to our message of building a resilient agriculture system. Carbon absorption and sequestration play a vital role in combating climate change. Algae emerges as a superior option to traditional oil crops like Soybeans, Palm Oil, and Canola for several reasons: - Algae excels at absorbing CO₂, sequestering up to 2.7 kg per kg of dry algae. It thrives in non-arable land, using saltwater or wastewater, and offers a positive environmental impact when grown with waste CO₂ and wastewater. - Traditional Oil Crops are less efficient than algae, needing arable land and freshwater, contributing to deforestation and habitat destruction. Their #environmental impact ranges from soil erosion to critical issues like #deforestation and #biodiversity loss. You might be surprised to learn that the #MethaneEmissions from the food and agriculture sector (40%) are more than that of the energy—fossil fuel—sector (35%). Yes, the methane produced by livestock (32%) is more than the methane produced from oil and gas (23%). That is an assuring piece of information for vegans, as eating less meat and dairy products can drastically reduce methane emissions. However, rice cultivation also emits enormous amounts of methane (8%), comparable to the methane emissions from coal (12%). Organic waste (landfills and wastewater) is the third most important contributor to human-caused methane production, reiterating the significant importance of reducing #FoodConsumption and waste...
