Up until the last few years, options for male birth control were mostly limited to two methods: vasectomy, which involves tying the tubes that allow sperm to be released, or condoms. In more recent years, however, an effort has been made to develop male contraceptives that allow safe sexual activity without the risk of pregnancy. While new medications have shown promising success rates, many have been discontinued due to side effects that women have long faced. Similarly to female birth control options, the idea behind male contraceptives is a hormonal approach that can essentially block sperm production via interference of spermatogenesis, the process by which sperm become mature. Recently a new male contraceptive gel has emerged, which is applied to the shoulder blades daily. This gel contains testosterone and segesterone acetate (an ingredient used in the female birth control ring) to reduce sperm production while preserving normal sexual function. Effective contraception is defined as less than 1 million sperm per millilitre of semen, compared to normal levels, which range between 15 to 200 million per millilitre. This gel is still in phase 2b of clinical trials, but among the 222 men who completed 3 weeks of treatment, 86% reached the target sperm count by week 15. We often talk about hormonal IUDs as an effective form of birth control, but how do they work? Do you know what's happening in your body once that little device is inserted? First off we should give IUDs the props they deserve. Hormonal IUDs are one of the most effective forms of birth control, with a success rate of over 99%. Once inserted, a hormonal IUD can provide continuous pregnancy protection for up to 8 years, depending on the type. This long-term solution is convenient for those who prefer not to worry about daily or monthly contraception methods. But how? Hormonal IUDs work primarily by releasing a very low dose of progestin, which thickens cervical mucus. This prevents sperm from reaching the egg and thins the uterine lining to prevent implantation. Many users experience lighter and less painful periods with a hormonal IUD. Some women may even stop having periods altogether.
