There has never been a more exciting time in Johnson & Johnson's history. It was an honor to represent our Innovative Medicine R&D organization at the Company’s first #EnterpriseBusinessReview and share with the analyst community how our high-impact pipeline and transformational medicines are poised to reach an increasing number of patients. Not only did we over-deliver on what we promised in 2021, but we’re building from a position of strength. Lucie Ellis-Taitt from In Vivo sat down with Scrip’s Lifetime Achievement winner Dr. Jeremy M. Levin, CEO of Ovid Therapeutic about how Pharma can preserve trust. Hard not to love this idea: “Every time you give a medicine to a patient, you change their lives and as a consequence you have to have a covenant with that patient.” Jeremy feels we’ve nailed the first part, but we’ve moved away from the second part. He goes on to theorize: “If a fraction of the marketing budgets were spent collectively explaining the benefit of medicines to society, we could do a tremendous amount of good as opposed to focusing on direct-to-consumer advertising.” So, I ask, what if... wait... how can Pharma divert a chunk of their marketing spend into patient education, patient access, and better patient... wait... human outcomes?  I intentionally forego the word ‘patient’ here because ‘patient’ suggests a diagnosis. Holistically, wouldn’t better education include that which occurs before disease surfaces in an effort to prevent disease where possible? For an example, see what companies like Daniel Ek CEO, Spotify) Neko Health are doing. You may already know that companies like Citeline Clinical are working tirelessly to eliminate waste and improve outcomes in clinical trials. Evaluate Ltd is helping companies optimize portfolio decisions. MMIT (Managed Markets Insight & Technology) is smoothing patients' access to therapies. The things that all of the people here create hold so much value in the current system, meaning they have an enormous impact on society. There are also ideas from each group that are born with a single, wildly important goal in mind – how can we intentionally disrupt the system itself to better educate fathers, mothers, sisters, lawyers, construction workers (you get it) about their treatment options? There isn't one answer, but Citeline Connect is undoubtedly a piece of that puzzle; a platform that focuses on patient education, inclusivity, and access to unique, personalized treatment options. When our central goal is to take care of each other at scale across the industry (and yes, the industry is well on its way with work to do), I think Dr. Levin’s vision has a wonderful chance at becoming a reality. And if you're shaking your hand saying thinking about replying "sure but look at the profits being made in Pharma!" first of all, I encourage any discussion/debate (some hit a point where Linkedin is no longer the correct medium to be fair). And nothing in this world is perfect. I would just say - the iPhone or laptop you'd be using to engage never gets made without the "scorekeeping" incentive that drives innovation on this planet. Last week, L.E.K Consulting’s (L.E.K. Consulting) global Life Sciences practice leaders had the privilege of meeting hundreds of clients across the broader biopharma, enabler and investment community attending the 42nd annual J.P. Morgan Healthcare Conference in San Francisco. Six key takeaways stood out as we look back and reflect across our discussions. 1.   More “buzz” v. JPM 2023 a.   Despite attendance remaining lower relative to pre-COVID, there was a noticeable sense of optimism that 2024 could represent a turning point for biotech deals, driven in part by end-of-year activity and immediately prior to JPM (e.g., AbbVie, Merck, Roche, Boehringer, J&J) clearly driving this enthusiasm 2.   Large acquisitions are back a.   Big pharma remain painfully aware of revenue cliffs looming large in the next five years, and seem willing to write bigger checks to address them, particularly for companies with late-stage or marketed assets aligned to pharma’s strategic pillars 3.   Biotechs in advanced stages projected to achieve gain increased negotiating power a.   As optimism grows, there's a shifting expectation that the market is no longer solely advantageous for buyers. Yet, this shift predominantly favors a select group of biotech companies. Those with clinically distinct profiles or those who have achieved late stage clinical or early commercial success, are most likely to benefit from this change b.   Biotechs with much of their value residing in a platform not tied directly to distinct pipeline programs are expected to continue facing investor skepticism 4.   Oncology, neuroscience and cardiometabolic represent key focus areas a.   ADCs, RLTs and cancer vaccines are clearly garnering outsized interest, fueled by recent deals and data suggesting they can unlock new populations and step changes in efficacy. b.   Cardiometabolic and neuroscience showed a noticeable uptick in interest v. prior years, driven by the GLP-1 wave and recent deals validating pharma willingness to invest 5.   Regional deals to remain important a.   With most biotech valuations remaining compressed, we continued to see significant interest in transactions with Asian and some smaller European players to raise non-dilutive funds 6.   Clear interest in identifying the most valuable Gen AI use cases a.   Gen AI continues to have a lot of buzz, although questions surged around which applications would be incremental v. transformative, how to ensure data security and trustworthiness of generated output, and the extent to which specific use cases can be meaningfully monetized
