The Unseen “servant” Leader by Martin Gutmann, A Synopsis - by Chad A. Ruwe "The Unseen Leader" by Martin Gutmann explores the concept of leadership in a unique and profound way. Gutmann challenges traditional notions of leadership, emphasizing that true leadership is often invisible to the naked eye as it is performed humbly, not seeking to be the focus of attention. M. Gutmann argues that the most effective leaders are those who operate behind the scenes, influencing and empowering others without seeking the spotlight. These "unseen leaders" understand that leadership is not about personal recognition (conducted humbly) but about achieving collective success (e.g. the overarching goals of functional depts or a division of a larger entity or enterprise.) Gutmann provides real-life examples and practical insights to illustrate his points. He emphasizes the importance of emotional intelligence, self-awareness, and the ability to build strong, collaborative relationships. Interestingly the book delves into the power of storytelling as a tool for leadership, emphasizing how narratives can inspire and motivate others. Gutmann’s "The Unseen Leader" challenges readers to rethink their approach to leadership and encourages them to adopt a more inclusive and collaborative style. It advocates for leaders who focus on the greater good rather than personal glory. This book is a valuable resource for anyone interested in leadership, whether in a corporate, nonprofit, or personal context. Gutmann offers a fresh perspective on what it means to be a leader and how to make a lasting impact by working quietly and effectively behind the scenes. Furthermore, his insights provide a refreshing and thought-provoking take on leadership that can transform the way we approach and practice it.

Today is the Oscars, awards are granted by a group of peers, reminding me of the similarities in the professional world as well. As Latina, I have shared experiences with many of my professional sisters, whether in the public or private sector. We were always "too (add adjective)" or "not enough (add adjective)" because of our enthusiasm, joy, creativity, flexibility, and productivity displayed loudly or colorfully via our voices (some with accents further "communication separation"), facial expressions, and attire. We learn to be chameleons mitigating misunderstanding while attempting to measure up to "their" expectations of what and how we should represent the who and what we were. Not only is it an exhausting transformation because expectations may change daily or hourly, it denies our true voice at the table, which by the way is well served with the spice, talent, flavor, creativity, and colorful perspective which we bring. As an immigrant, I am very grateful for the experience that my adopted country has afforded me. I accept and celebrate that I stand strongly on the shoulders of many before me. Remember that phrase, "Immigrants get things done?" I realize I must take responsibility for presenting as my true self, a professional Latina in a work environment that may scurry away from my loud, colorful, passionate presentation and will benefit for exactly the same reasons. (I wonder if this is the true oxymoron my English professor encouraged me to figure out as I graduated with my B.A.in English?)

This is such a good book.
"Victories are not won by the many but by the valiant." - Hernán Cortés "What nation that has ruled the world has never faced defeat? What renowned captain, I ask, ever returned home because he lost a battle or was expelled from a town? Not one, certainly, for without perseverance, they would not have conquered or triumphed." I've been engrossed in a book I can't put down: "Conquistador: Hernán Cortés, King Montezuma, and the Last Stand of the Aztecs" by Buddy Levy. This is one of the most fascinating accounts of this period in history, and I'm disappointed I didn't start learning more about it until recently.
