There are two main challenges on the way to net zero and zero emissions. How do you generate clean, predictable energy when the sun isn't shining and the wind isn't blowing? And on the other hand, how do you get paid for your energy when there's too much sun, too much wind, and the grid cannot accept it? That's where Tidetec comes in. At Tidetec. We have a simplified. An optimized turbine solution that allows us to harness the power of tidal range. Tidal range is not influenced by weather cycles or day and night cycles, therefore can provide a predictable source of energy to the grid of the planned projects in the UK. For tidal lagoons, it can generate up to 12% of the UK's annual energy need. Despite its high potential to play a significant role in the future energy mix, the exploitation of tidal power has been very limited up till now. state-of-the-art technology relies heavily on technology from the hydropower sector. This has been done in collaboration with industrial partners such as Rain Power, who provided the turbine and INDAR for the generator. Additionally, a model turbine and generator were built for testing purposes. The model turbine has been tested at the testing rig of Munich Tech University under the frame of the Eurostar project Safe Coast Testing. This model also provided us with a set of scalable parameters such as the hydraulic profile and the hill chart for use for traditional calculations. This test proved the concept and provided some first reliable input on the performance of the turbine, the robustness of the turning mechanism. Then the ceiling design. And because of our high pumping efficiency, we can respect the natural intertidal cycles and keep the local wildlife protected.
