Pack your suitcase! 📍 HappyCow just released their list of the top 20 most plant-based cities in the world, based on indicators such as the number of plant-based restaurants and vegan-friendly businesses. Cities such as London, Paris, and Portland remain at high positions in this year’s list, with their diversity of plant-based options in restaurants and grocery stores making them a great destination for travellers on a plant-based diet – or just a great place to live if you’re following a climate-conscious lifestyle. But there’s room for newcomers! Some cities have made waves by improving their plant-based friendliness, with Hamburg in Germany and the Portuguese capital Lisbon showing up for the first time on HappyCow’s list! 🌱 We’re happy to see more cities adapting to the demand for more climate-friendly, sustainable, and delicious plant-based diets. I’m excited for the opportunity to attend #PetfoodForum this year in Kansas City! Kicking off today’s #PetfoodEssentials sessions was Suzy Badaracco, president of Culinary Tides, Inc., providing insight into #pet #snacking. A key point is that #Covid has had a lasting effect on consumer behaviors. “The behavior has changed dramatically from what you would normally predict to happen to what they are actually doing,” Badarraco says. “For instance, #sustainability usually drops through the floor when there’s an inflationary period. That’s not actually happening. They’re still spending on sustainability selectively.” Consumers are NOT going toward #comfortfood, she says, but are instead exploring new flavors. They’re also not dropping their spending on #healthfood. #Vegetarian behaviors are also going up in consumers, which extends to the pet industry. “But I’ll tell you: They’re not saving the planet; they’re saving their wallets,” Badarraco says. “It’s cheaper to be vegetarian. Sometimes they impose that upon the pet.” Some key health trends: ·      56% would pay more for a product labeled healthy (IFIC). ·      47% are interested in products to support functional needs (Innova). ·      80% consider their pet’s health to be as important as their own (Beneo). ·      78% will pay more for clean label, natural claims (Ingredion). When it comes to #sustainability, there’s a high level of ignorance from consumers about what various claims mean. A quarter of them cannot articulate what makes a product sustainable, 60% don’t know what carbon neutral means, and most don’t know how to identify a sustainable company. “If you’re not talking about it, they have no idea you’re sustainable,” Badarraco says.

🚨Adopting Sustainability Comes with Challenges—What are Your Solutions?🚨 (Part 1/2) Some restaurants still hesitate to adopt sustainability strategies because of some barriers they’ll need to overcome actively: 👉 UPFRONT COSTS—Sustainability initiatives require an initial investment in equipment or tech. 👉 LACK OF AWARENESS—Many business owners still lack knowledge of the environmental impact of restaurants. 👉 RESISTANCE TO CHANGE—Some team members or business partners may express doubts when adopting new practices. 👉 REGULATORY COMPLIANCE—There are various regulations related to food safety and waste management restaurants will need to adhere to.
