Embarking on my volunteer journey with Ashwini Charitable Trust , I discovered a world where passion meets purpose. In the challenging environment of Bengaluru's slums, I met Anbu (name changed), a young boy whose eye were filled with dreams and whose talent in drawing was as vivid as his imagination. A Talent Unveiled: Anbu's world was transformed through sketches and colors; his drawings were brilliant. However, his talent remained a hidden treasure, unseen by the world. As a volunteer, my mission became clear: to nurture this budding artist and give his dreams the wings they deserved. I brought Anbu to ACT where our sessions transcended traditional education because Anbu could give a free reign to his imagination and expressed himself freely. Witnessing his confidence bloom through art was a testament to the transformative power of mentorship and belief. Anbu’s journey was more than personal growth; it became a source of inspiration for the community. His art showcased the beauty in everyday life. This ripple effect underscored the impact of fostering individual talents. With ACT's resources and encouragement, Anbu’s talent bloomed. The paintings made by him and other ACT kids are featured on the gratitude cards we sent to our donors. We have also used these pieces of art for circulars and brochures that are used for our own internal communication. Whilst we celebrate these lofty numbers and I sincerely hope this encourages others to get started and grow on their philanthropic journey, it's also important to yet again talk about the nature of giving. Having spent a decade on the other side of the proverbial table (and living through countless negotiations on overhead budgets), think all of us working in the social change space could do with more trusting donors. Pardon my reiterating the obvious, but I wouldn't have to if this was common knowledge/practice: ▪️Unrestricted or flexible grants help the civil society prioritise needs of the community and lest we forget we live in a dynamic world ▪️Social change is a long and arduous journey, and more often than not there are no magic pills to achieve impact in a year's time ▪️As the saying goes, it takes more than a... program team to conceive, raise funds for, execute, evaluate, report on, and manage effectiveness and efficiency of any program. If you expect it all, maybe pay for their time and energy? I'm not even speaking of their well-being and other needs yet ▪️Civil society organisations are not vendors to execute your ideas on your behalf. Dignity and choice ought to be non-negotiable values, irrespective of who holds the power in any relationship (Views are my own, and do not represent that of my current or past employers)

The descendants of a family whose matriarch once donated their lands which later became the iconic Eden Gardens of Today, who contributed for construction of first set of paved roads from Calcutta to Puri, who transformed a community of dacoits of Sunderbans into a community of fishermen, and constructed the iconic Babughat and Ahiritola Ghats, are now living in utter poverty and are even unable to maintain their ancestral house. This case study revolving around the family of a renowned businesswoman of Calcutta in the 18th Century calls for deeper Integration of charitable activities to create some sustainability for the descendants of those initiating the same. And that's where schedule VII of the Companies' Act, 2013 comes into action - CSR. It all takes some structuring for ensuring that certain proceeds from such activities are going into a vehicle which creates some income for everyone. Today a tourism business can further multiply the impact on a remote village in a scenic location, which would have received some charitable contributions in the first place. RGE Founder's Day is here! This is a special occasion for all RGE group of companies, including Sateri, to honor our visionary leader who laid the foundation for our remarkable journey.
