Charting My Path Through the Software Development Job Market: A Bootcamp Grad’s Journey One month ago, I turned a significant page in my life—I graduated from a software developer bootcamp, full of hope and ready to dive into the tech world. The journey since then has been a mix of excitement, challenges, and relentless learning. With close to a thousand applications submitted and only three responses so far, the road has not been easy, but my resolve remains strong. Navigating the job search without a traditional computer science degree or prior industry experience is daunting. Each day, I send out applications like ships across the digital sea, hoping for a response. Despite the silence from potential employers, I use this time to sharpen my skills and deepen my understanding of what it takes to be a junior software developer. I've embraced a range of free online resources to continue my education, focusing on the practical knowledge and real-world applications that I might need on the job. Every tutorial completed, every line of code written, and every project tackled adds to my growing skill set. It's a slow build, but one I know is worth the effort. Networking has also become a key part of my daily routine. I’m actively engaging with the community on LinkedIn, joining discussions, sharing my projects, and connecting with industry professionals. Each interaction is a step towards visibility in a crowded market. I won't lie—there are moments when frustration creeps in due to the lack of responses. However, I remind myself of my end goal: to land a role where I can contribute and grow as a software developer. This vision keeps me grounded and persistent. For anyone out there who might be feeling overwhelmed by their job search in tech, remember you're not alone. We are more than our unanswered applications. We are the projects we build, the knowledge we acquire, and the networks we create. Stay focused on your goals, continue to learn, and keep engaging with the world around you. If you're doing a career change to software engineering, or you are a junior developer looking for a new job, this is probably the worst year to do it. 😓 The market has deeply changed, so you need to learn the new rules of the game. ⛳ Put the max effort on: 1. Building a simple but well curated portfolio. 2. Networking (especially on LinkedIn + X) 3. Reading books to own your jargon. Books are always the most accurate source of knowledge. 4. Doing a few courses to learn the new hipster stuff (Youtube + Udemy are enough to put you on the road) 5. Don't discuss rates, just say yes and ask when do you start! 6. Not sending a ton of CVs like you're a mail delivery system. Instead pick a few companies you like, and invest on creating a cover letter and a more tuned CV for them. Reach out to these companies recruiters on LinkedIn, or send them a personalized e-mail. 7. Showing enthusiasm, geekness, and a deep sense of responsibility and love for the craft. 8. Own you tools. 9. Sticking to the fundamentals. It's not very important that you know all the React hooks. It's important that you know Javascript's nature async, or how does the event loop works. 10. Persevering. It's super important that you keep yourself on the sunny side of the street. Believe and fight! Just had a DM from someone who is, to my mind, absolutely qualified to land a junior software engineer job today. Maybe they'll get a job offer today. Or maybe it'll take a couple months. The market for junior software types is tough still so who can say. My point is that, there are plenty of you out there. Qualified but not employed in software yet. I say this because some of you are still asking the question "what should I learn to get into software?" Do some soul searching. If you've 1. completed 3-6 small projects on your own 2. completed 1+ larger projects on your own 3. spent 6+ months learning software (to include bootcamps and self taught) 4. done some data structure and algorithm challenges (ex. LeetCode or free code camp DSA challenges) Then guess what? You're ready. So the question you should be asking yourself isn't "what should I learn to get into software?" Instead, you should be asking yourself "now that I'm qualified to get into software, how would my time be best spent until I get that job?" So now what? Continue to hone your craft, keep applying, keep networking. And what will that accomplish? If you're qualified and you keep looking -> you get into software. Simple #software #juniordeveloper

🎓 Post-Bootcamp Schedule! 🎓 Next  week, I'll be graduating from my C# .NET full stack bootcamp, and here’s my plan to stay productive while focusing on my job search and personal development. Here's my theoretical schedule: Monday-Friday (with 10-minute breaks every hour) 🕖 🏋️♀️7am - Wake up, eat breakfast, and go to the gym(4x times a week) 📧 9:30am - Check emails, follow up with hiring managers, or other contacts 🔗 10:00am - LinkedIn networking, engaging with content, and post creation 💼 10:45am - Job search (applying, targeting companies, adding connections) 🍽️ 12pm - Lunch! 💼 1pm - Job search continued 💻 1:30pm - Personal coding projects 🧩 4pm - LeetCode for one hour 🕔 5pm - Log off for the night Saturday/Sunday: My weekend/time to myself 📅 If I'm not hired by the end of August, I'll adapt by picking up a part-time bartending job to cover my base bills.
