I remember having to drop into my dad's office once back when he worked as an engineer for Sperry/Univac (now Unisys) back in the '80s. I stumbled upon what is known as a rolodex on his desk and asked him what it was. When he explained it kept the phone numbers of all the people he might need to call to do his work, it shocked me. Looking back at that rolodex, I am inspired as my network here and outside this platform is incredibly large, thoughtful, insightful and helpful. They are FAR beyond this rolodex that awed my as a young boy. I appreciate you all! If you know of anyone looking to add a high powered Testing leader to their team, I am available for my next contract immediately! And that drop-in at the office, it was on the way to the theme park Valleyfair where the company was sponsoring a family picnic. The 80s were so rockin!

Three things I look for in any company I want to work at: 1) A clear vision of who they are and what my role would be in that This is critical. You could have the BEST role at the coolest company, and none of it will matter if when the going gets tough, your role doesn't matter. As everyone has seen with recent layoffs, no matter how good you are individually, the tide can turn if the company as a whole goes off course. 2) Strongly held LIVED values Any company can throw some words on a wall or a website. "Living" values is much more important. If a company says "we support our employees", I'm immediately asking for or looking for *evidence* of that. 3) Alignment with what I need from a job What you need from a job varies dramatically throughout your life. At some points you might crave growth and pace. At others you might need stability and flexibility. The job needs to align with that, not the other way around. -- What's on your list?? Navigating The Fustercluck #98 If We Put in More Time into Recruiting, We'd Spend Less Time on Layoffs I’m so tired of hearing that HR doesn’t have time to interview people. Because we certainly seem to have time to fire people. We’re in the talent business. Talent drives results. That’s why you have to make time. Recruiting is an art form. Not a science. Computers canvassing resumes don’t cut it. They can hunt and peck for all the magic words you want, and, still, you won’t find the unique talent you need. Certain words. Certain schools. Lead to certain lack of diversity. In ethnicity. Geography. Experiences. Resumes do not perform jobs. People do. Hire people and not resumes. Let’s look harder. Because those who recruit the best get the best results. Especially, if you include those without the "best" resumes.

Been laid off recently? Yes, it sucks. After a disruption like a layoff, our energy reserves are low and our sense of identity doesn’t feel as grounded. We’re here to tell you that being let go doesn’t have to spiral into sour times for your career if you take specific actions to move from a place of hurting to healing. The truth is, there’s no replacement for time and its magical healing powers: take this time to find joy, to reflect in writing or in conversation, to rest and to re-energise. We make our wisest decisions when our bellies and our hearts are full and we’re tuned into our purpose. Times are changing. Growing up, I was taught the right way to make a living was to start at the bottom of a company and work yourself up. So of course, I did the complete opposite. Writing has always been my passion. With a mix of stubbornness, naivety, some luck, and perhaps some delusion (with an extra dose of naivety), I flung myself beyond conventional walls and found a home outside of my comfort zone. I’ve worked for free, worked for cheap swag, made six figures, fell close to rock bottom after layoffs, worked again for table scraps, and so much more. In the past year, I’ve faced homelessness twice, and yet I’ve been luckier than most. All of it has taught me: 1. Time is more valuable than a title. 2. The corporate ladder is nothing more than a candle burning at both ends. 3. The only person who can truly empathize with your situation is you. 4. Stress can kill. Take care of yourself.
