Today, Google Quantum AI and Google.org are joining XPRIZE and the Geneva Science and Diplomacy Anticipator (GESDA) to launch XPRIZE Quantum Applications, a 3-year, $5 million global competition to apply quantum computing to solve real-world challenges. The competition, which kicks off today, aims to generate quantum computing algorithms that can be put into practice (today or in the future) to help achieve societally beneficial goals, like those described by the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). The competition is closely aligned with Google Quantum AI’s focus on building a large-scale, error corrected quantum computer, and developing useful quantum computing applications, and it builds on Google.org’s support for applying emerging technology to large, global challenges — especially as related to the SDGs.

Today is the last day for teams to register for the XPRIZE for Quantum Applications, presented by GESDA - Geneva Science and Diplomacy Anticipator and Google. With $5 million up for grabs, contestants will have 3 years to prove quantum advantage for a real-world use case that provides societal benefit. I'm told that 440 teams from around the world had at least started the registration process earlier this month. Represent both academic and commercial interests. Even some individuals getting involved. Contest organizers noticed that quantum hardware has advanced to the point where practical experimentation is possible, but most quantum algorithms are only for learning more about quantum itself. They want to show the world quantum is a game-changer. The U.S. and Germany sign a joint statement on Cooperation in Quantum Information Science and Technology... If AI freaks you out, just wait until quantum rolls around. This new agreement strives to ensure: 1. Cooperation via shared principles, including openness, transparency, honesty, equity, fair competition, objectivity, protection and enforcement of intellectual property, and democratic values. 2, Commit to create inclusive scientific research communities and tackle cross-cutting issues of common interest such as equity, diversity, inclusion, and accessibility. 3. Collaborate to identify overlapping interests and opportunities for future scientific cooperation. 4. Encourage a broad and inclusive QIST research and development (R&D) ecosystem to facilitate multidisciplinary research, and the sharing of research methodologies, infrastructure, and data. 5. Foster shared prosperity by building a trusted global market and supply chain for QIST R&D, and supporting its growth, by engaging stakeholders including industry consortia, research leaders, policy makers, and research security stakeholders to grow the future QIST R&D marketplace based on shared engagement principles. 6. Open and encourage opportunities for QIST collaborations across QIST R&D and its value chain. 7. Support the development of the next generation of scientists and engineers necessary to expand the field. 8.
