According to Liebowitz & Porter (2022) “Despite efforts to select and support successful school leaders, however, relatively little is understood about the prior professional experiences and skillsets that principals possess upon entry into their positions.” (p.1) As seasoned school leaders, let us take a moment to reflect upon the beginning of our respective journeys in school leadership. Were we able to demonstrate effectiveness in our roles? Did we possess a comprehensive understanding of the associated responsibilities? Did our knowledge and prior experience adequately equip us for the challenges that awaited us? And perhaps most importantly in those initial years, were we in a position to fulfil our duties wisely, ensuring the best outcomes for our students and staff members? In the pursuit of cultivating ourselves into effective school leaders, one might ponder the level of support we received and that which is now bestowed upon young teachers to facilitate their professional growth and gradual preparation for the multifaceted challenges inherent in school leadership. Has there been a huge change? For many years, we've been gathering and analysing head of school salary data from the worldwide community of international schools. The final analysis of this year's research is now available and shares the professional and personal challenges facing international school leaders. International school heads are leading their communities through a growing number of unpredictable events, natural disasters, and human conflicts, while the context and requirements for their leadership of international education are changing too. Their responses to our survey portray a changed profession in a changing world, where the pace and complex demands can exceed the capacity and training of international school leaders.
