There’s no arguing: The only way to effectively decarbonize is to make each aspect of our transportation sector more sustainable. But how? Each one has a roadmap and we’re seeing some encouraging progress. 🚘 Even with their flaws, the best option for cars is electric vehicles and 14 million were sold last year. The challenge? Creating a high energy density battery that uses less energy per mile and can go farther on a single charge. 🚛 Plain and simple, when it comes to trucks, we need to see fuel cells. The batteries are lighter than electric batteries and they recharge more quickly. The challenge? Building more abundant and accessible charging stations for these vehicles. 🚃 Trains remain the most electrified transport subsector but we have to continue to electrify train systems. The challenge? While developing a new electric rail line is promising, it’s also expensive and many similar projects have failed to get off the ground. 🚢 The shipping sector needs to move away from bunker fuels and it’s working towards that goal. One promising alternative is ammonia or NH3. It’s a hydrogen-rich liquid fuel and can be produced all year round. The challenge? Identifying billions of dollars to invest in this to scale it. Electrifying Semi’s has an outsized impact in CO2 reduction by virtue of how much diesel Semi’s consume per vehicle over its heavily utilized life cycle. Scaling the Semi-charging infrastructure will have the greatest return in reduced CO2 from relatively lower infrastructure investment. Cheaper batteries with higher density are on the way, from Sakuu for example. The predictability of trucking routes makes it possible to optimize investment on those routes that best fit the energy profile of EV Semis.

✈️ There’s the “green energy” component to sustainable transportation and there’s the meta system/infrastructure approach—creating better multi-modal processes. The fuel problem feels fairly multi-step: chemical>technical design>certification>scaling and infrastructure . The process approach feels like something we can at least evaluate if not make more efficient today. Material upgrades to enable faster transportation is a major opportunity, but the thing that really interests me most is the creation of new regional routes. Given the increased need for resilience due to climate change, new routes increase opportunities for efficiency and new economic opportunities/indusy access in currently depressed areas.
