If you want to lead a group, the first thing you have to consider is whether you make them feel safe. Also, people should feel safe to disagree with you if you want to grow as a team and a leader.

From 2016. A Great article. But I don’t see these traits in the current corporate structure at all. Maybe here on LinkedIn where like minded individuals hope for these great traits. It’s pitched in theory and in feel good corporate memos. But in real application not so much. There are very few in mid level management that prescribe to Servent Leadership or Collaborate with those under Them as a whole. They are sometimes the gate keepers that prevent these good people from rising up in the ranks to put it actually in practice. It creates an artificial island for the top executives with the best of intentions from getting the right plays down to the lower ranks. I know I sound somewhat of a pessimist here and really I am not. I believe in Empathy and Servent Leadership. I have seen the success and culture it can create. But I also know its pretty dammed out numbered in today’s corporate landscape. Again, Great Article. Well worth a read.

Excellent Review on Leadership Competencies - The core competencies are certainly Ethical Practices, High Moral Values, Empowerment & Good Corporate Governance!!

The irony of the report is, that a great leader is great by trying to NOT be a leader! 😂 Let me explain 1. Strong ethics and provides a sense of safety. When staff feels safe, they become less reliant on the leader, and is more willing to explore and self organize, which leads to point 2... 2. Empowers others to self organize The best leader is one that eventually enables others to not need him or her. The great leader relinquishes power to the team, and then help others to become a closely knit team, which is why point 3 is... 3. Fosters a sense of connection and belonging And this sense of connection should happen regardless of whether the leader is there. The connection links everyone to everyone else, and while the leader might role model the connection, but the team is the center, not the leader. Which is why the leader needs to do point 4, 4. Show openness to ideas, and fosters organizational learning Ideas that do not come from the leader, and it is the the organization that learns and grows, even if eventually the organization outgrows the leader... and so, point 5 is... 5. Nurtures growth. The best indicator that a leader is doing a great job, is that eventually, the organization grows beyond the leader. Much like a great parent, or a teacher, or a doctor. If the team constantly needs the leader, then the leader is not doing a great job. It seems like the best leaders are trying to make themselves redundant, or am I oversimplifying things?

But do these skills point to deeper competencies? A survey of 195 leaders from more than 30 global organizations suggests that there are five major themes of competencies that strong leaders exhibit: -High ethical standards and providing a safe environment -Empowering individuals to self-organize -Promoting connection and belonging among employees -Open to new ideas and experimentation -Committed to the professional and intellectual growth of employees While many of these competencies may seem obvious, they are difficult for leaders to master because to do so would require them to act against their nature. Individuals are not hardwired to relinquish control or be open to small failures. The ability to actively improve these competencies should be a priority for leaders.
