President Biden's latest executive order and announcement are monumental steps forward for women's health research and innovation! Launching a new NIH-wide effort that will direct key investments of $200 million in Fiscal Year 2025 to fund new, interdisciplinary women’s health research—a first step towards the transformative central Fund on Women’s Health that the President has called on Congress to invest in. These actions build on the First Lady’s announcement last month of the Advanced Research Projects Agency for Health (ARPA-H) Sprint for Women’s Health, which committed $100 million towards transformative research and development in women’s health. ✨ Highlights of the announcement include: ◾ ARPA-H’s Sprint for Women’s Health committing $100 million to groundbreaking research and development. ◾ A 50% increase in investments by NIH's Small Business Innovation Research Program to support innovators in women’s health. ◾ NIH's efforts to standardize data for research on women’s health, enhancing data collection and analysis. Today marks a monumental step forward for #women's #health on a global scale. Today is the day we celebrate International Women’s Day. And as such, I would like to share a little insight into women’s health, a topic that is very important to me and my colleagues alike (KJ Park, Andrea Ott, & Martina Schuldt). The transformation in the landscape of women's health is indeed a significant and long-overdue shift. It represents a movement towards recognizing the diverse needs and experiences of women, including those from marginalized communities. The strides made in normalizing discussions around menstruation, embracing sexual pleasure, and advocating for reproductive autonomy mark important milestones in women's healthcare. However, the journey towards equitable and inclusive healthcare is still ongoing. Despite being half of the global population, women, especially BIPOC women, continue to encounter disparities in access to and quality of healthcare. Addressing these disparities requires not only increasing representation in healthcare leadership and research but also dismantling systemic barriers that perpetuate inequalities. Over the past few years, the growing focus on women's health presents opportunities for innovation and investment in areas such as personalized medicine, digital health solutions, and reproductive technologies. By prioritizing women's health, we not only improve individual outcomes but also contribute to broader societal well-being and economic prosperity. As a woman, recognizing and advocating for our own health needs is crucial. By embracing our bodies and advocating for inclusive and comprehensive care, we empower ourselves and future generations to prioritize their health. #womenshealth #womenhistorymonth #girlsempowerment

Women and girls have a critical role to play in the design of health care products intended for them. Bonnie Keith, PATH's Senior Advisor for Reproductive Health, says: “Women and girls have valuable perspectives to offer across all levels of the R&D value chain and need to be represented in the data and institutions that directly impact the safety and efficacy of women’s health treatments.” But persistent weaknesses in our health systems—such as inequitable representation of women in R&D leadership roles and limited inclusion of women in clinical trials—lead to limited markets and ineffective solutions for addressing the unique health needs of women and girls around the world. How can advocates address these barriers? In an article for PATH, Rachel Ndirangu and Taonga Chilalika discuss the need to support efforts such as: ✔️ Promoting the development and implementation of gender-inclusive policies ✔️ Increasing access to and acceptance of STEM education for girls ✔️ Establishing funded programs to expand opportunities for women pursuing careers in health R&D ✔️ And advocating for programs to provide mentorship and networking opportunities. We’re the Emperor Women’s Collective – an employee resource group for women, non-binary persons and allies, here at Emperor. Today we’re taking the reins on Cam’s LinkedIn, to shine some light on a few of the serious issues that affect women all around the world, every day. The official UN 2024 theme for IWD is Invest in women: Accelerate progress. There are still so many spaces where we’d like to see progress for women. In one of our earliest group meetings, we realised that barriers to healthcare access, representation and advocacy was something that we’d all been affected by at some point.   That’s why we’ve chosen Women’s Health: Access and Advocacy as our take on the IWD 2024 theme. According to a report by the Women’s Health Taskforce, women are far more likely than men to experience delays in both diagnosis and treatment for various health conditions. Let’s explore just a few of the reasons why: 🔬 Women are less likely to be included in medical research. A study in the National Library of Medicine found female representation to be just 37% across a variety of clinical trials. 🤰 There’s a huge gap in terms of women’s sexual and reproductive health – placing young women and girls most at risk. According to the UN, in 2019, maternal health conditions such as haemorrhage, sepsis or obstructed labour were the second leading cause of death in girls aged 15-19. 🧠 Women have very specific mental health needs, that are not always acknowledged or addressed by policies, services or practices (British Medical Association).     📝 A lack of government advocacy. Specific women’s health matters are rarely considered in health policies and strategies. While these facts are confronting, we promise it’s not all gloom and doom!
