There’s no bigger advocate of events than me, especially for engaging fans. I firmly believe that creating tangible brand experiences is the best way to transform casual fans into evangelists. Events can also be the catalyst for ancillary revenue growth and fuel revenue in other areas; think content, audio, influencer, etc. However, deciding to step into live events is challenging when the strategy and goal are solely revenue growth. Those in the industry understand the revenue hurdles, especially in a tight ad market. Per the article, it’s encouraging to see a recognition that events won’t lead to significant revenue, but complementary growth. My concern and advice are that you need to plant the flag and commit. Planning to execute 5 to 20 events that are custom, tied to intellectual property, or linked to cultural moments seems more like a value add than a standalone opportunity. Partners want sure things, and navigating an experience market with a ‘sell-kill’ opportunity is extremely difficult. Additionally, custom events under a music brand can be challenging. Artists often charge more due to a lack of other monetizable opportunities and come with a long list of exclusions, resulting in higher overhead, which then also impacts the street-facing sponsorship fee. I don’t mean to be pessimistic, but I’ve seen too many large companies attempt to delve into fan-focused events without full commitment but with full-on revenue expectations. https://lnkd.in/ePVkxT72

Can strategic renewal save the media business? Field & Stream thinks so. This is a classic example of Strategic Renewal. Grounded in the reframe that Field and Stream was more than a media company, it was a lifestyle brand. The company had taken ad hoc approaches throughout the years. Dicks Sporting Goods had the merchandising rights and Starwood had the lodging rights. With all the IP consolidated into a new entity, this not merely a heritage/nostalgia play. Field and Stream will continue to produce editorial content. Post reframe, the Company created a couple of growth platforms to leverage a new understanding of where it can be competitive. Beyond lodging and merchandise, there is also events. Launching a music festival creates a new touchpoint for fans and allows for an IRL experience of the Field and Stream lifestyle. Lastly, tying it all together is a membership program. Why not allow your fans to self identify and demonstrate their support? What makes this a Reframe and not just a licensing play is the integrated approach to combining activities. Strategy makes the whole more valuable than the sum of it's parts. The idea was that your entertainment for the evening SHOULD be the person sitting next to you at the dinner table instead of some panel discussion — you shouldn’t show up to hear ONE interesting person speak, EVERYONE should be interesting was the goal. While that still underpins much of our programming and ethos, and is core to the Head of Bookclubs and Discussions role, we recognized that music, film and sports, things you certainly sit and listen/watch and often DON’T engage with people as much during the event, are obviously huge cultural organizers and not having an intentional strategy around them would be a huge loss. Sports can give you something to cheer for, rally around and break the ice, and whether you show up for SEC football, Premier League soccer or an F1 Watch Party is linked to your identity. Music and Film enthusiasts can have deeper things in common than just liking top 40 pop songs or Marvel films (no offense) that lead to deeper cultural and intellectual resonance. And we realized there was an opening to do these types of events intentionally. I’m a huge Arsenal fan but on most mornings I like a more tranquil environment where I can actually sit comfortably to watch, with perhaps not as much yelling as at a bar, but still social — something between my living room couch and the Arsenal supporters pub. I don’t LOVE live music but again, mostly due to the packed-like-sardines nature of most concerts. But more curated concerts in a more Sofar Sounds vibe? So we’ve started organizing soccer watch parties with various groups including NYCFooty, the first of which was a Gotham FC NWSL watch party for the Championship game (which they won!) and we did an amazing U.S. Open Watch party with Chase Travel and Andy Roddick. We’re working on amazing partnerships in film with studios and production houses to do intentional programming and working directly with artists to do the same. Ultimately while we realized the point of Maxwell wasn’t entertainment in and of itself, entertainment with an intellectual, more personal angle could be a core part of the community flywheel that deserved special attention. Interesting job in an even more interesting time

Some big news! After 13 years of full-time employment, I'm taking the plunge to be the boss at my new venture - bona fide mgmt. We supply both music and marcomms services, why? Because they're two parts of my life I had kept completely separate, until now. I've not shouted about it previously on LinkedIn, but alongside my career in PR and marcomms - I'm a musician, music manager and record label owner. I've toured the world as a session drummer, continue to manage an international DJ and producer, and run a record label that has had tracks featured on BBC Radio 1, Kiss FM and countless Spotify playlists. After playing a festival stage or curating a rave at the weekend - I'd be back at a a boardroom the following week to discuss marcomms strategy and deliver for clients for various agencies or my colleagues at my previous employer, PM Connect. I loved every minute of both parts of my life, which stimulated different elements of my creative and business brain. However, for years I treated them as two opposing silos that fought each other. I have since realised that these worlds are not separate at all. Whether a B2B company, record label or DJ - story telling, brand identity and keeping it real, matters. Therefore, at bona fide mgmt - with 'bona fide music' and 'bona fide marcomms' divisions, we're providing marcomms services for businesses both in and outside the music industry, alongside my music management work. This is a big change and one I've been nervous about making, but I'm thrilled to say I already have a solid client base and long-term partners, which is a really positive initial step!
