BEAUTIFUL BREAKING NEWS! EU Court of Justices rules against Wolf Culling! The EU Court of Justice has delivered a landmark ruling, affirming that economic reasons alone can't justify downgrading wolf protections. This decision effectively cancels Ursula von der Leyen's scientifically unsubstantiated proposal to lower the protection status of wolves in the EU. The court emphasized that any derogations must be based on clear, precise objectives and supported by scientific evidence. Conservation comes first, ensuring that the long-term survival and favorable conservation status of this iconic species are prioritized. The recent case before the European Court of Justice (ECJ) involved the Austrian region of Tyrol's decision to allow wolf hunting in 2022 due to increasing attacks on livestock. Environmental groups challenged this decision, arguing it violated the EU's Habitats Directive, which protects wolves as a strictly protected species. The case was referred to the ECJ by the Tyrolean Provincial Administrative Court for interpretation of EU law. The ECJ ruled that economic reasons alone, such as preventing livestock losses, are insufficient to justify exceptions to the ban on wolf hunting. ECJ has taken similar decisons against: Sweden: In 2010, the ECJ opened an infringement case (2010/4200) which led to the temporary halting of licensed wolf hunts. A second infringement case (2014/2178) was opened due to amendments in Swedish law that restricted environmental organizations' access to justice in court concerning hunting regulations. Finland: In 2019 (C-674/17 Tapiola), the ECJ ruled that environmental directives need to be respected. The new decision not only reinforces the protection of wolves but also upholds the integrity of EU conservation laws, setting a precedent for the protection of other endangered species. This sounds like courageous and very welcomed decision from the ECJ. However, the ruling the article refers to dates back to October, 2019. Is there a more recent ECJ ruling on that issue?

Sounds good in theory, on paper, but in the U.S. there are "tough?" laws currently in place intended to protect wolves from human hunters/intentional poisonings/deliberate acts of cruelty and torture, but due to - no surprise - rampant corruption, even blatant violations of the laws to protect wildlife, especially wolves, by even more blatant violators like the human in the photo below, still regularly get away with egregiously breaking these laws - even when caught with copious evidence- and receive zero punishments, or little more than a slap on the wrist from law enforcement and the courts...will these new EU laws be vigorously enforced, or like our endangered wolves, continue to be eagerly poached for laughs and political target practice... https://www.linkedin.com/posts/mountainjournal_on-the-heels-of-a-wyoming-man-torturing-and-activity-7209675654634618880--Jp_?utm_source=share&utm_medium=member_desktop

I take it your dog has never been attacked by a wolf.

This is good news but we will have to keep up the work. In Switzerland, no legal challenge can be made to the Federal Council to stop culling wolves and this year, and under a revised hunting plan they plan to allow a massive cull of wolves ("preventive shooting"). And now this is under the discretion of the local state (canton). (This consultation is closed now but showcases the problem) https://campax.org/coexistence-not-killing-consultation/ Also they are looking to 'control' ibex, otters, beavers, golden eagle ... so what next??? (Funny how quiet many of the organisations that purport to protect wildlife actually ended up being) Killing species to control their populations needs scientific input - not populist mumbo jumbo. But hey, whatever gets the vote. Great news. The Yellowstone wolf project is a great example of the benefits of having wolves in the area and ecosystem.

Nature returns where it belongs, and only nature will establish a sound balance, and not natures most evil predator that thinks it can think....

Also just to highlight how this all started... We have to fight for the remaining protection of wolves. What is a protected species if it is not protected? https://www.theguardian.com/environment/2024/jan/27/a-wolf-killed-the-eu-presidents-precious-pony-then-the-fight-to-catch-the-predator-began

Bravo! Nature, law, and science prevail. We can all learn and follow suit where politics, hearsay, and personal gains have no place in conservation!

A first step in functional protection. Now comes essential monitoring and enforcement. Who will mind this store? Are their organizations in place to facilitate the use of livestock - wolf co-existence strategies. If farmers are going to be reimbursed for any livestock that have been killed, they must be required to show that they have implemented those strategies.

Hopefully this will help to stop the useless killing of wolfes in Switzerland as well.
