WHAT IS A HEAT PUMP? A heat pump is a device that moves heat from one location to another by utilizing a refrigeration cycle or mechanical compression. It can provide both heating and cooling by transferring thermal energy from a heat source (such as the air, ground, or water) to a heat sink (such as a building or water supply) or vice versa, depending on the specific mode of operation. An air source heat pump (ASHP, or air to water heat pump) is a type of heat pump that can absorb heat from outside a structure and release it inside using the same vapor-compression refrigeration process and much the same equipment as air conditioners but used in the opposite direction. Unlike an air conditioning unit, most ASHPs are reversible and are able to either warm or cool buildings and also provide domestic hot water. In 2017, a street cooling system was installed in Mecca, Saudi Arabia to help cool down hajj pilgrims during the hot weather. The system consists of 750 poles that spray water mist and covers a walking route of more than 10 km. It is supplied through two main stations and was put in place to combat temperatures that can reach up to 48 degrees Celsius.
