This week the organisation I am privileged to lead turned 10. For the past 10 years, the Queensland Family and Child Commission has been making sure that the systems meant to protect children are performing their role to the best of their ability. Over those 10 years our legislated role has been to: 1) promote the safety, wellbeing and best interests of children and young people; 2) promote and advocate for the responsibility of families and communities to protect and care for children and young people; and 3) improve the child protection system. One of our biggest strengths has been our ability to work across Departmental silos – ensuring the needs of children and families come first. We must talk about housing, mental health, employment, poverty, education, cultural connection, and health in the conversations about child and family wellbeing – and this big picture unfortunately gets fractured by our systems of government. Since our establishment in 2014, we have made a profound impact by improving child protection and youth justice systems through rigorous reviews and audits leading to better policies and practices. Our research and amplification of the views of workers, young people and families have provided crucial insights for informed decision-making. We have made over 120 submissions to Parliament covering a broad range of topics related to child safety, wellbeing, and systemic improvement. By bringing together government agencies, service providers, and communities, we have helped build a more cohesive and effective framework for protecting children in Queensland. We look forward to continuing this vital work and ultimately creating positive impact for all Queenslanders.

Our revamped State of the Child profiles offer a variety of data points about children and families and their well-being in Pennsylvania and all 67 counties, including Population Diversity, Children Living in Poverty, and a variety of Socioeconomic Data. Whereas the cost of crisis interventions like youth justice, child protection and children in care has risen 47%.

This statistic is not just a number; it represents countless young lives crying out for help and support in our communities. As somebody who recruits in Children’s Social Work, This deeply concerns me. This highlights an urgent need for us to reflect on and enhance our support systems for children. Every call is a reminder of the critical role we play in safeguarding and nurturing the mental and emotional well-being of our youth. What Can We Do? Increase Accessibility: Ensure children have easy access to support services and know where to turn when they need help. Promote Awareness: Educate parents, teachers, and communities about the signs of distress in children and how to respond effectively. Strengthen Collaboration: Work closely with schools, healthcare providers, and child protection agencies to create a robust support network. We can cope with fewer children; we can’t cope with yet more parents insufficiently dedicated to the tasks of love. The working assumption of modern societies is that every ‘normal’ person should seek to have children – and should in every way be enabled to do so. Yet wisdom may point in a different direction. In our heart of hearts, many of us do not necessarily want to have children, but feel an enormous pressure to produce them anyway. After a few years together, a young couple will come under a barrage of questions as to when a baby will be on the way, and of judgement that there must be something extremely wrong (physically or morally) with them were they to have no interest in delivering one. And yet a society that properly loved children would know that the single greatest contribution to children’s welfare is the removal of the idea that everyone should automatically have them. A good society would give equal prestige to childless and childful states. We best honour children, the born and the unborn, by accepting that parenting should never be the automatic choice – just as the wisest way to ensure that people will have happy marriages is to destigmatize the single state.
