The right place, the right people, the wrong time. 7 years ago today, Doug and I were about to run our first international event for Action Academy. For all our best efforts and intentions, Action Academy failed. ❌ We didn’t know how to sell. ❌ We didn’t understand our value. ❌ And I gave up when the going got tough. We went our seperate ways. Doug went off to start a revolutionary fitness gaming company, and I stayed in France to become the king of jäger bombs and attempt a pro snowboarding career. 6 years later, Doug and I started Concept80. 1 year in, we have had teams working across 6 countries simultaneously delivering next-gen content for the world’s biggest names in sport and travel such as Nike, PUMA Group, Nissan Motor Corporation, Alpine, McLaren Racing, The Walt Disney Company and many more… The people we work with push the limits of filmmaking in every way. They defy convention, they break the “rules”, they’re innovative, they’re fast, they are Full-Stack Filmmakers. And I am proud to say that together we are moving the dial. This journey with Doug, through a countless number of Red Bulls, late nights, panicked outbursts, risks and rewards, has taught me that failure with the right people is just a step towards the real deal. Transitioning out of corporate life to a portfolio of work is an iterative process - prototyping, testing, tweaking, and repeating; moving ever closer to the 'solution'. This is how far I've got in five months: I started with research to understand how others approached it. The research included speaking to people who had made the move, reading more on the subject, experimentation diving into some areas, seeking feedback from stakeholders (family, mentors, coaches, network), unlearning corporate speak and behaviours and reconnecting with people. I used the idea of designing my life to identify my desired values - healthy, helpful, and happy that would guide my decision making. I continue to explore what those three words really mean to me. I'm now at the stage where I have a portfolio of activities with some clarity of how much time is allocated to each one. I've identified diverse types of compensation for the activities e.g. Volunteering does not compensate in cash. Mental health activities can be measured in attainment and behaviour. I'm still learning and iterating. I'm extremely glad that I joined Michele Evans at NxtWaves - It's given me some structure where I need it without the parts I didn't want. It's opened my mind to options and presented avenues I would not have explored alone. It's helping me find my 'tribe' as a friend described it. 🥳 Happy 10th Anniversary to us! 🥳 It's been an incredible journey for Mech Tech over the last ten years, from our foundation by Jonathan Hann , through many ups and downs, to the present day which finds us strong, growing, and looking forward to the future. We created this video to act as a marker in time, documenting the team's thoughts, feelings, and emotions around the world of Mech Tech where we're Engineering Futures, Constructing Partnerships. ''No one can whistle a symphony. It takes a whole orchestra to play it.” When I reflect on my journey, one truth stands out above all: none of this would have been possible without #teamwork. It's more than just a practice or a process—it's a transformative force that can change everything. Imagine minds converging on a singular idea, aligned in purpose and passion and what all can be achieved through it. Recently, with an office opening at hand, everyone had more tasks than they could count, yet they all went above and beyond to make the opening, a successful event. I believe no task is beneath anyone, and I'm proud to see this mindset imbibed in each team member. Whether it's helping with sample making or a photoshoot, everyone is involved in everything. (literally everything) Every task, every project is a team effort. Yes, individual goals are important, but being a team player takes us to unimaginable heights. The success we achieve as a team is far greater than what any of us could accomplish alone. Every challenge we face becomes a stepping stone, and every milestone we reach is the proof our collective strength. So, here's to my incredible team at ARRCOAT!
