Trying to consolidate an event like #SHRM24 into one cohesive post is quite difficult. I have been working at events like SHRM Annual Conference & Expo for over 20 years, but nothing compares to the sheer magnitude of it, and not just because there were 26,000 attendees or because Kelly Clarkson put on another show-stopping performance. The collective mindset of #betterworkplaces is what left the greatest impression on me. From the Expo Hall where some of the greatest conversations took place among attendees, sponsors, and our incredible exhibitors to the employee lounge where colleagues discussed the day’s takeaways to the hotel shuttle where I met some truly incredible thought leaders and speakers humbly sharing their life’s work and passions. Even though it was a conference, it was unlike anything I had attended in the past. There are too many moments that impacted me to report here, but I will start by thanking all the SHRM members and attendees for taking time away from your work and families to invest in yourselves and your employees. There is no greater gift a manager has ever given me than time away from the office to self-develop. Thank you to our SHRM team and countless volunteers, without whom this event would not be possible. I will never know the hours, months, and years it takes to put on something like that. Thank you to my leaders, George and Leslie, for investing in your team and thank you to the many new friends I made (please comment below so we can stay in touch)! If there was one thing that kept resonating with me throughout, it was the tone that was set by an executive in a panel on Sunday in the Executive Network track. Simply but profoundly put (paraphrasing), “Be a culture steward and have courage. Model the behavior you expect within your organizations,” Brian Dickens. Also, shameless plug, but way to GO VOLS!!!🍊⚾️ Jason Isbell, singer/song writer puts it this way, “It gets easier, but it never gets easy.” Let’s be the change, HR professionals. I'm still buzzing with excitement from my first-ever SHRM conference in Las Vegas! 🙌 As an emerging talent development professional from Michigan, this experience was a complete game-changer for me. 🌟 First off, a huge shout-out to Claire Stroh, MBA, PHR, SHRM-CP for her amazing session on "Elevating and Uplifting the Next Generation of HR Leaders." Claire, your insights on leveraging LinkedIn and other tips for up-and-coming HR pros like myself were pure gold! 🥇💡(and as you can see I am putting these lessons into place as we speak) Two other sessions that blew my mind: 1️⃣ "Cut Early Turnover! As someone who is currently spearheading retention programs and onboarding improvements at my company, this session was so informative and even though he said not too, I couldn't help but take lots of notes! Dick's strategies were spot-on and I can't wait to put them into action! 🚀📉 2️⃣ "HR is Life! Making your Organization Better through the Lessons of Ted Lasso" by Michael S. Cohen (He/Him). Not only did Michael's engaging session touch on some crucial issues we should be addressing more, but he also made me want to binge-watch Ted Lasso all over again! 📺❤️ (If you haven't seen it yet, trust me, it's a must-watch!) I just left the conference feeling inspired, empowered, and ready to make a real difference in the world of HR. 💪 I'm so grateful for the connections I made and the knowledge I gained. Reflecting on SHRM 2024: Strengthened Connections and Professional Renewal Just returned to the office from 2024 SHRM Conference & Expo in Chicago(easy commute), and it was an enriching experience. The ticket to SHRM is expensive, requires 3 days out of the office, so let’s discuss the ROI: Building Stronger Bonds: At SHRM, I had the opportunity to connect with my HR team on a deeper level. These interactions strengthened trust, collaboration, and friendships. Strategy Validation: The conference allowed me to validate our existing strategies and explore ways to enhance them. Hearing industry examples—both successful and failed—provided valuable insights. Industry Exposure: I engaged with HR leaders from diverse industries, stepping outside my usual bubble. We shared ideas, discussed challenges, and explored solutions. Meaningful Networking: Beyond LinkedIn connections, I made an effort to truly understand fellow attendees. Learning about their businesses, motivations, and concerns was enlightening. Follow-Up Commitment: I sent follow-up messages to recap discussions and address solutions or obstacles with people I met. Not every connection reached that stage, but the effort was worthwhile. Professional Renewal: SHRM re-energized me both professionally and personally. It reminded me of the vital role HR plays in organizations, the shared pain, the effort required, and the impact it makes. Gratitude: I’m thankful for the experience and the chance to attend a conference with local, national, and global impact. Blessed to work for an organization like Geneva Trading that makes professional and personal development a priority. In summary, SHRM was a great investment of time and resources. What an incredible week spent with The Hr NETWORK Magazine 🌟   Our team had a blast at the dinner on Wednesday night with some of our amazing clients, enjoying great food, conversation and even better company🥂 where Samantha Hiew, PhD delivered a really interesting talk about her journey with neurodiversity. Yesterday, we attended the Future Leaders Conference at Murrayfield, where we gained invaluable insights and inspiration from the impressive lineup of keynote speakers. Principal, Donna W. shared her thoughts on the conference: "It was a fantastic event. I enjoyed networking with other like-minded HR Professionals and also taking the opportunity to hear from many inspiring keynote speakers. The stand-out speaker for me; however, was Katie Leveson. She spoke about the importance of ensuring the right culture, shape/structure and skills are in place in your business to make it thrive, and that this is particularly important during times of change and uncertainty. "Building a culture of trust is key to managing any change process" This resonated with me and is something I will be taking away from the conference."   James Richardson, Principal, also shared his thoughts on the conference commenting that: “Jane Sparrow spoke at the conference about empathy and working towards supporting emotionally intelligent managers and leaders. What I took from this was viewing challenges with both colleagues and workloads not as something to worry over but as something to be curious about. One of the main takeaways from what she said was ‘Try to reflect each day on something you have learned or taken from every experience, instead of beating yourself up as a leader’ That’s something that I’m going to try to do going forward”   It was truly a fantastic experience connecting with different professionals and learning from industry experts.
