For those that took a coding bootcamp and are currently experiencing issues with landing a job, here’s what helped me get a job after my bootcamp: 1. Find a role that is not only looking for juniors, but also has a tech stack that you learned in the bootcamp. 2. Once one is complete, find the Hiring Manager/Recruiter responsible for the role that you’re wanting to apply to. 3. Connect with them and establish a relationship. This is very important because speaking directly with this individual will allow you to get straight to the “meat and bones” at hand and establish whether or not you’re a good fit. 4. Afterwards, and probably the most important step, go DIRECTLY to the companies website and apply on their site. DO NOT APPLY THROUGH LINKEDIN. 5. Have a spread sheet created that tracks where you applied, the recruiter you spoke with, the date you replied, and then have 2-3 columns that track your follow-up attempts with the hiring manager regarding your application. 6. Go outside and keep doing your favorite hobbies. Hopefully one of those hobbies include building new apps with your tech stack so you remain ‘current’. There’s no point to all of this if you can’t maintain a level of mental clarity while dealing with a process that WILL include a lot of rejections. Because, if I'm being honest, the rejections do NOT end once you get a job. Your code will reject you as well, at times lmao. Cheers, and good luck!!! 21st November - exactly two months ago I finished my #fullstackdeveloper course. Two very hard months indeed. I thought the course would be the most difficult part, you know, switching from teaching to programming... Completely different things, outside of the #comfortzone and all. However, very shortly after finishing it, I discovered that I was wrong. The hard part was yet to come and NOBODY actually talks about it, so here we go! Welcome to the Crappy Phase N2! I want to think I am a realistic person. I have hopes, I like to dream every now and then, but when it comes to job and money, I am down-to-earth kind of a person. I very well knew I wouldn't get a job from one day to another. Starting from scratch is never easy... What I did not know was that I would be facing DEAD SILENCE. What do I mean by that? I have an account on at least 10 different platforms and there are almost no job offers for "entry level". And when I move on to "Junior" positions I get the typical 3-5 years of experience ( when it says 8 I genuinely laugh and cry). Back in September I was worried about being invited to an interview and failing at the technical part of it, but after two months I have had only one , and even that one was a mistake because somebody did not read my CV correctly. I also got rejected within 2 minutes of applying for a job, that must be a new record! I didn't even have enough time to look at other job offers and I was out 😳 I can tell you, the so-many-times mentioned #impostersyndrome is having a time of its life in my head 💃... but you know what?I have built a separate room for it, in my head, and I keep it there 🔐 . There are some days I just want to hide under the bed, but then I reach out to some of the wonderful people I have around me and they help me see the light again. Lately, I have been training a lot too...I run until all that negativity gets out. And it helps. One day at a time and on those, when I get two or more NOs, I go for a ☕ and a cinnamon bun. Because one thing is for sure, there's no turning back, only option is going forward. And I will land that first job, and I will stick my foot in that tech door and I will keep it there. Because this is not my first rodeo, it will just take a wee longer, that's it. So what am I trying to say? To all of you #juniors👶 out there, please don't give up! Find your support group and hold on to it. Do yoga, go for a walk, have a coffee with a senior, go to networking meetups...every little grain counts. You are not alone! Remind yourself #why you decided to make this change in the first place. Being without a job is a scary thing, I know, but your new job might be just around the corner.So, if you must, bite your teeth, take a deep breath and go for it! I wanted to take some time out today to share some exciting news 😊. Last week, I finalised a job offer that has been on the cards for a bit of time now. Not as a software developer, but as a a part-time secondary science teacher, on a one-year temporary contract, working three days a week, starting this September. WHAT?! So, after leaving the teaching profession and committing almost five months to completing an intense full-stack software development bootcamp with School Of Code, I'm actually going to go BACK to that very same profession I left? Technically speaking, yes. But does this mean I've decided a career in tech is not for me and I want nothing else but to be a teacher? Absolutely not. I loved my experience on the bootcamp and want to continue honing the skills I gained from it for a very long time! This decision to go back into teaching is not something I had always known about in advance whilst I was on the bootcamp. In fact, it was when I saw this particular part-time teaching role being advertised, that I got inspired. I saw a unique opportunity that I wanted to take advantage of (part-time teaching jobs in schools are rare to come by). To provide some context - as part of the School Of Code bootcamp selection process, the final stage task got us to outline how we would use technology to help the world, assuming we had access to all the resources, time and knowledge that we could possibly need. We were basically instructed to go and live in the Dreamer room (Disney ideation) - and I frickin' loved it 😍! It was whilst completing this task that I realised a burning desire to ideate ways in which technology could support overstretched teachers to do their jobs more efficiently. How I see it, is that by holding a part-time job as a teacher, I will be right in the thick of the education sector, allowing me to conduct research, identify problems, and ideate solutions, all whilst working in close proximity to loads of other teachers! And, as it's a part-time job, I will have two days in the week (plus the weekends) which are totally mine, and my intention is to use a lot of this time continuing to hone my tech skills and get to a stage where I can build purposeful apps that provide solutions to many problems faced by teachers today. My conscious choice to not apply for full-time tech jobs after finishing the bootcamp has felt like a super scary one to make, but I feel a genuine excitement about it too, and that's a feeling I want to listen to. I intend to write a post soon about why this feels so scary and how I've address these reservations. Sometimes, you've just got to just listen to those burning desires inside you; they are there for a reason!

If you're doing a career change to software engineering, or you are a junior developer looking for a new job, this is probably the worst year to do it. 😓 The market has deeply changed, so you need to learn the new rules of the game. ⛳ Put the max effort on: 1. Building a simple but well curated portfolio. 2. Networking (especially on LinkedIn + X) 3. Reading books to own your jargon. Books are always the most accurate source of knowledge. 4. Doing a few courses to learn the new hipster stuff (Youtube + Udemy are enough to put you on the road) 5. Don't discuss rates, just say yes and ask when do you start! 6. Not sending a ton of CVs like you're a mail delivery system. Instead pick a few companies you like, and invest on creating a cover letter and a more tuned CV for them. Reach out to these companies recruiters on LinkedIn, or send them a personalized e-mail. 7. Showing enthusiasm, geekness, and a deep sense of responsibility and love for the craft. 8. Own you tools. 9. Sticking to the fundamentals. It's not very important that you know all the React hooks. It's important that you know Javascript's nature async, or how does the event loop works. 10. Persevering. It's super important that you keep yourself on the sunny side of the street. Believe and fight! With that spirit in mind, I embarked on my journey to learn the Go programming language today.  💻 On Day 1, I explored the basics: variables, data types, functions, and I/O operations.  To put my newfound knowledge to the test, I built a simple CLI calculator.
