The way to teach history today!
"Is there a way to teach...history without either 'vilifying' individuals or glossing over the thornier parts of their legacies?" asks Alex Pinelli in #AHAPerspectives. "Absolutely. My students proved it last year, during our lesson on Columbus."

In the realm of education, we often focus on metrics like skilled educators, small class sizes, and test scores. While these are vital, we sometimes overlook a crucial element: a sense of school community. Community is more than pep rallies and spirit weeks; it’s about fostering pride and joy within the school building. In my latest article, I explore the transformative power of a strong school community and its impact on students' academic and personal growth. #education #teaching

🚨 Education starts with relationship 🚨 Yesterday, Andrea Guiden Pittman, Ph.D. and I visited Statesman Academy for Boys - a Charter School serving black middle school students in southeast D.C. I was struck by the commitment the school leadership has for the care of their teachers, who work exceptionally hard in a challenging context. They have an intentional focus on therapeutic professional development, a dedicated zen space (equipped with massage chairs!) and THREE in-house therapists to work exclusively with adults in the school. They take care of their teachers as they serve their community. A few other things that stood out to me: 💡 The teachers have an overwhelming focus on relationship and community, as the foundation for effective teaching and learning. The founder spoke to hundreds of young black men and asked them what they needed from school, before opening. 💡 EVERY student I saw in the school was carrying a book, with so many reading as they were waiting for their class. I don’t think I’ve seen as many young people incidentally reading in one place. 💡 The students leave the school having visited at least two different countries, exploring the history, values and culture of communities in other contexts. 💡 The school walls are full of pictures of the students achieving. When they graduate, the pictures are taken down from the wall and given to the students. Then the walls are filled with the pictures of the new students - it’s their school. 💡 Everyone who enters the school walks on a red carpet to tracks played by a DJ. Every morning. School is an event. #teaching #teachingandlearning #teacherdevelopment #teachinginspiration #washingtondc #everychildmatters #teachers

Transition to high school is such an important rite of passage in a young person’s life and we see it as a privilege to lead them on this journey. We look forward to connecting at various points in the year as we welcome so many families into our beautiful community Kingswood College Melbourne. To the class of 2030, we are already so proud of you!!! #year7transition #learnaswelive #education #excellence #courage #perseverance #kindness #respect
