Last week the Hunger Funding Gap Report of 2024 was released, and as expected, the numbers related to the food insecurity in the world were, well not at all positive… The report stated that only 35% of appeals for countries facing crisis levels of hunger were met in 2023. This means that in a world with abundance of food, a staggering number of 281.6 million people are being food insecure or experiencing hunger! In December 2024, I visited Akabo, a fragile county in the Republic of South Sudan, which is currently experiencing the most severe food insecurity in decades. Here, the majority of the population is experiencing emergency (IPC Phase 4) acute food insecurity – just like the Hunger Funding Gap Report describes – and the people there are depending on food handout to survive, and where most survive on 1 meal a day (after food handouts!). “Why?” You might ask. Well it is mainly due to heavy floods and unusual heavy rainfall (caused by climate change) that are destroying cultivated land and making accessibility near to impossible, combined with conflict. Oxfam Denmark, Oxfam in South Sudan and our national partner @CIDOSouthSudan is with funding from Norad - Norwegian Agency for Development Cooperation trying to combat food insecurity in areas of South Sudan (amongst 5 other vulnerable countries). Last week, we saw a post on Linked In highlighting all the scary statistics about water poverty: ❌ 2,000+ people die daily from waterborne diseases ❌ Over 2 billion people don't have access to safe water ❌ 30% of water projects fail in the first 5 years The person who posted it asked what people not involved in WASH organizations can do to fight water poverty. Environmental Management 2024 : Food Poverty This is good to see as was Pearl’s post yesterday about Next Meal’s joined up thinking to tackle food poverty at grassroots level. The facts about food production and wastage as simply staggering as you’ll see from the Eco Experts post I’ll share in a moment. On the one hand we need to conserve water but on the other a massive 9.8 million tonnes of food the growth ; production and processing of which takes a massive amount of water each year is simply wasted. I have completely lost faith in the big utility companies and food producers / supermarkets when it comes to the damage being down to the environment because of the steps that they are failing to take on a range of issues that could mitigate the effect of climate change and the U.K. parliaments are pretty hopeless too. It all comes back to changing consumer behaviour and accepting that “ cheap” food and “ cheap” water both come at a very “ expensive” production cost especially as far as the environment is concerned. That’s why it’s so good that Pearl and the Next Meal team are tackling these issues in such a professional manner- put simply no one can function if dehydrated or hungry. Food clubs are great ideas.
