EV Infrastructure Project Management | Business Development Expert | Corporate Relations Strategy Lead
I just did a CityTV Toronto news interview on the topic of Canadian Tariffs on Chinese made electric vehicles coming to Canada. It should air tomorrow. Here's a preview...The EV society is a member driven EV advocacy not-for-profit, representing the interests of EV owners and drivers across Canada. So we (EV Society) are generally in support any policies that help accelerate EV adoption including both vehicle incentives and charging infrastructure incentives. We are basically all about a cleaner healthier environment and if we can help create more green jobs for Canadians through smart policymaking, that’s a bonus! Vehicle manufacturing tariffs are tricky as they can be a double-edged sword. Tariffs do restrict consumer access to more affordable EVs in the short term, but do allow domestic EV production time to adjust and preserve jobs near term. The EV Society of course does not want to undermine the billions of dollars invested into Canada's supply chain. As we see it, tariffs are necessary in the short term, but should be ramped down within a well defined timeframe. Competition is always a net benefit to consumers in the long term. It's unfortunate that most automakers have not been more proactive with their investments in EVs. Had auto OEMS began bigger investments 10-15 years ago like Tesla and BYD did, they would not have had to worry so much about their shareholders wagging the dog. The Harley-Davidson's Japanese motorcycle threat from the 80s is a great example of how tariffs can be helpful when implemented correctly. The US gov’t gradually reduced the 5-year tariff protection period implemented which gave Harley-Davidson time to retool and restructure, ultimately making the company more competitive. The key point here is that there was a defined tariff ramp-down period. It’s not just about the amount of the tariff! Without a publicly disclosed end point to the tariff, companies become disincentivized to innovate which is bad for domestic companies in the long run and for bad taxpayers. Companies and shareholders alike desire predictability and defined rules to operate within, not chaos. The blueprint and timeline of the tariff period should be communicated so various levels of government and companies can prepare, innovate, and retrain people for new jobs. Tweaks and adjustments may need to be made along the way, to refine the plan and minimize the risk of catastrophic boom-bust cycles. Like it or not, Chinese electric vehicles will make it to North America, it is just a matter of time! EV Society Electric Autonomy Electric Mobility Canada #USMCA #CUSMA #Protectionism
