It’s the 20th anniversary of Section 28 being repealed. The UK legislation banned schools and other local authorities from ‘promoting homosexuality’. This meant school members were unable to talk about queer relationships, and LGBTQ+ people couldn’t be represented in any books, plays and leaflets available in libraries and schools. It had a catastrophic effect on LGBTQ+ people growing up in the 80s and 90s. A whole generation of queer people never saw themselves represented at school and school members were unable to openly talk about their queer relationships. While the repeal of Section 28 was a significant milestone for LGBTQ+ rights in the UK, there are still ongoing challenges and barriers that persist. We still have a long way to go! At Magenta, inclusivity and acceptance is at the heart of everything we do. We believe research agencies are in a privileged position: we have the opportunity shine a spotlight on marginalised groups and use insight to inspire change. Through a range of projects, we’ve worked with a diverse range of people from the queer community. We believe that understanding leads to acceptance and inclusion. Over the last 20 years, there have been dramatic gains for LGBTQ+ rights in the U.S.: gay, queer, and trans individuals fought for and won equal treatment at work, legal marriage, the freedom to raise children, and the ability to openly serve in the military, and more. But now, many of these new-won rights are at risk. Many countries (mostly in the Middle East and Africa) continue to brutally repress LGBTQ+ individuals. In the U.S., a record number of anti-LGBTQ+ bills were introduced in State capitols in 2023. With governments and international blocs in retreat, where can LGBTQ+ employees turn to for support? Global companies. It’s in companies’ best interest for them to continue to stay committed to LGBTQ+ rights and freedoms. #LGBTQRights

On this day, 20 years ago, Section 28 was repealed. This hateful law forced young people and teachers to hide who they were. LGBTQ children were stopped from seeing and learning about people like themselves. Sacha Deshmukh, Amnesty International UK's Chief Executive, campaigned to repeal Section 28: "20 years ago we acted together to end the hateful Section 28. But we can't be complacent, the UK is sliding back on equal rights. We must ensure new generations of LGBTQ people are truly free to be themselves." We continue to fight for LGBTQ+ equality in the UK and the world today. We must continue to learn from the campaign to repeal Section 28 as we fight for trans rights, to #BanConversionTherapy and build a world where no one is discriminated against because of who they love or how they identify. According to a 2024 report from the Public Religion Research Institute, nearly 30% of Gen Z adults identify as LGBTQ+. When we talk about what it looks like to support and care for the next generations of our LGBTQ+ community, it is imperative that we recognize the unique needs of our young people who are coming of age in an era of more visibility than ever before—and a hostile political climate. We need to continue to make sure that LGBTQ+ young people are connected with supportive programs and services, both at school and in their local community, that can help them navigate their identities. We will continue to fight for full lived and legal equality so that LGBTQ+ young people learn about rather than experience discrimination in the classroom. #LGBTQ #Equality #ProtectLGBTQYouth #LGBTQYouth

As we mark the 75th anniversary of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, a doctrine written to recognize that every person has inherent dignity and inalienable rights. Yet, while more progress has been made than ever to ensure equal rights for every single person, we continue to witness discrimination, dehumanization, and defamation of LGBTQ+ folks around the world. At a time where many LGBTQ+ young people still live in daily fear of persecution and violence, we stand firmly together with fellow advocates, allies, and the global LGBTQ+ community to bring life-saving resources to for queer and trans young people who are still not able to live fully and authentically. Queer, trans, intersex, and ace young people everywhere deserve love, freedom, justice, acceptance, and inclusion. Borders and barriers should not negate belonging. Every year, March 31 marks Trans Day of Visibility. It’s a day to celebrate the everyday experiences and aspirations of transgender and non-binary people around the world. The day also raises awareness of the pervasive discrimination still facing too many within the LGBTQIA+ community. According to the Human Rights Campaign, the largest LGBTQ+ rights organization in the US: There are more than 2 million transgender people in the US. One in five adults knows someone who uses non-binary pronouns other than he or she There were more than 340 anti-LGBTQ+ legislative bills introduced in 2023 across the country—including 90 bills that would restrict gender-affirming medical care for young trans people. In the US, LGBTQ+ people are more likely to live in poverty. Black trans women face high rates of fatal violence.

On June 28, 1969, the Stonewall riots began – a historic series of events over six days where LGBTQ+ protesters fought back against police raids at the Stonewall Inn in New York City. This was far from the first instance of U.S. police brutality against queer communities (targeting gay bars was just one manifestation). The revolt at Stonewall marked a significant moment in LGBTQ+ activism, furthering a spirited resistance that would shape the future of the movement in the United States. BLO stands in solidarity with the LGBTQ+ community as we commemorate this anniversary. We honor the brave individuals who fought back against discrimination and state-sanctioned violence, as well as those who do so today. We believe that art has the power to reflect and inspire change. Through the language of opera, we seek to amplify the voices of diverse individuals and communities both on and offstage – especially those that are marginalized and underrepresented – to foster empathy, understanding, and meaningful human connections.
