Parker Close, Eastbourne - Exterior View 1/2 For this project, we aimed to craft a building that exuded an air of mystery, with a dark and richly textured facade. Our choice? The distinctive burnt wood technique known as 'Shou Sugi Ban', a method steeped in 18th-century Japanese tradition. This process involves charring the wood's surface before treating it with natural oils. The result is a striking texture that truly anchors the building in its surroundings. It might seem paradoxical, but scorching the wood not only safeguards and preserves it, it also bestows a uniquely beautiful aesthetic. The Sinfonia is a minimalistic surface-mounted downlighting luminaires comprised of a cylinder profile and interchangeable decorative ring. The cylinder profile incorporates dedicated optical system creating a soft oval ambient light whereas the asymmetric distribution version perfectly utilizes the decorative ring as a no-glare shielding. The design of Sinfonia follows the principle of “play of light, architect and art”. If you take a closer look at the edge of the profile, the collision of the anodized aluminum and the glided inwall is the final touch to the surface treatment. The subtleness and delicacy make Sinfonia not only a lighting tool and also a decorative element in the air or on the ceiling within the space. #lighting #lightingdesign #art #architecture #design

Public spaces, however need to offer a lot more moment to moment variegated experiences. The changes offered by, movement illumination, shadows, occupation of space sections by people for different activities, changing perception of objects, changing facade colours and textures, compositions involving non-standard angles, contouring elements like level change, steps and ramps, all offer better sensorial remembrances.

Join us as we interview Clare Turner, Co-founder and Creative Director at CTO Lighting Ltd, on the inspiration behind our CASCATA chandelier. 🔎 Where do you find inspiration for CTO Lighting Ltd designs? My main draws of inspiration are materials and processes, architecture, and nature. Each material that we work with has its unique characteristics, and I enjoy experimenting with these in different combinations to create truly original designs. The artistry and artisanal skill required to manipulate these materials is also something that I’ve always been deeply interested in.  Architecture from the early to mid-20th century also provides a wealth of inspiration. In this period architecture was focused on function, simplicity, and clean lines, which are all values that we strive to embody in our lighting designs.  Nature also plays a key role. I find the shapes, textures and colours in nature fascinating and love how these are in continuous flux and change – a truly endless source of inspiration. With the ever-increasing urbanisation, I also think it’s hugely important to keep ties with nature, as this is a grounding and calming influence. 🔎 What was the inspiration behind the CASCATA? We wanted to create glass that had some movement to mimic nature such as waterfalls and rivulets. Most of the experimentation was around creating the undulations and achieving the correct opacity to result in a diffused light. 🔎 How does CASCATA impact on the ambience of a room? CASCATA was designed to provide stunning, dynamic illumination that would enhance any space. We wanted glass to be the hero material as this has a wonderful capacity to diffuse light. Attractive anthracite, functional black ⚫ The right shape shapes successful design just as decisively as the right colour.
