The Wisdom of a Burmese Proverb on Sustainability ........................................................... As someone of Burmese origin, I’d like to share a proverb that has been passed down through many generations by our ancestors. This saying strongly emphasises the importance of sustainability in Burmese society: “Set up a market in your backyard.” A backyard market garden typically utilises a small plot of land, making efficient use of available space. By embracing the values taught by our ancestors, we can reap several benefits: Sustainable Practice: Many backyard market gardens prioritise organic and sustainable growing methods, avoiding synthetic pesticides and fertilisers. Sense of Nature: Through its harmonious blend of cultivated crops, native plants, and ecological practices, creating a vibrant and sustainable oasis right at home for the family. Economic Benefit: For gardeners, a backyard market garden can provide a source of income or a fresh food supply for their kitchen. Community Engagement: For the community, it means access to locally grown produce. These gardens foster a sense of community, encouraging local food production and consumption.
