🌟 Congratulations to Dr. Luis Carvalho! 🌟 Yesterday, Luís Carvalho successfully defended his PhD in Biochemistry with an outstanding thesis titled "Empowering Personal Health in Bladder Cancer Patients by Disclosing Medical Information Hidden in Complex Urinary Proteomes: Diagnostic, Prognostic, and Response to Therapy." 🧬💡 Collaborating with international experts such as Prof. José-Luis Capelo-Martínez from the Associated Laboratory for Green Chemistry (LAQV/REQUIMTE), Jacek Wisniewski from the Max Planck Institute of Biochemistry, and Dr. Luis Campos-Pinheiro from ULS de São José, Dr. Carvalho has made significant strides towards non-invasive detection of bladder cancer recurrence. This project has been truly international and interdisciplinary. Despite his primary focus, Dr. Carvalho's research also extended to impactful contributions in #RenalCellCarcinoma alongside Rajiv Dhir at the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center and Jeremiah Morrissey at Washington University School of Medicine in St. Louis. Furthermore, his ongoing project on #Breastcancer with Harvard Medical School showcases his dedication and versatility in cancer research. 🧪🔬 Working closely with you, Dr. Carvalho, has been a privilege and an honour. Meet Mahek Sadiq, a fourth-year NDSU doctoral student making notable advancements in Biomedical Engineering. Sadiq specializes in 2D nanomaterials for cancer research, creating innovative biosensors for early diagnosis. Her work earned top prizes, including first in the sixth annual North Dakota Biomedical Engineering Symposium. “Witnessing patients with advanced-stage cancer that had metastasized to different organs due to late diagnosis, often linked to the absence of early symptoms deeply impacted me, sparking a growing interest in cancer research,” she said. Sapienza Università di Roma Over the coming weeks, we will introduce the people and organisations behind the LEGATO Project, a clinical trial study aiming to define a new evidence-based standard of care for recurrent glioblastoma. This week, we will focus on Sapienza University of Rome. Founded in 1303, Sapienza is the oldest university in Rome. With over 140,000 students, Sapienza is one of the largest universities in Europe and is a major centre of research and education in Italy. Sapienza University’s medical research and educational activities are carried out in collaboration with the teaching hospitals Umberto I and the Sant’Andrea General Hospitals in Rome which provide high-quality teaching and research facilities as well as specialized care for patients. The university is also home to several research centres and institutes, including the Institute of Human Genetics, the Institute of Biomedical Technologies, and the Institute of Molecular Biology. In the LEGATO project, Sapienza University will take part in the implementation and realization of the project, cooperating with the EORTC - European Organisation for Research and Treatment of Cancer in conducting the clinical trial and publishing the results. BC Cancer's graduate and postdoctoral fellow society, GrasPods, initiated a program called Diversify Research this summer that invited high school students from BIPOC and/or LGBTQIA2S+ backgrounds to learn the fundamentals of cancer research from mentors of BC Cancer. The program included several online modules and an in-person module at the BC Cancer Research Centre (L.J. Blackmore Cancer Research Centre) that included many hands-on demonstrations of basic lab techniques, including confocal microscopy, tissue culture, and bacterial transformations. Students were also able to meet and talk with mentors as well as a faculty member, Dr. Carol Chen. Diversify Research aims to encourage students of minority groups to pursue cancer research as a career and to help increase diversity among cancer researchers in the future. Increasing diversity among researchers is a key step to improving cancer survival for patients of BIPOC and/or LGBTQIA2S+ backgrounds, who are often underrepresented in studies.
