My GFF 2024 Experience! Just got back from Mumbai after attending the Global Fintech Fest 2024 in Mumbai, Jio World Convention Centre. It was a huge event all about new ways to use technology in finance . There were so many cool things to see and learn. Imagine 800+ speakers across 300 sessions - it was like a mega-buffet of fintech knowledge, and I wanted to sample everything! The payments revolution was front and center at the event. Visa and PayU stole the show with some mind-blowing innovations they've been cooking up with their partners. It looks like digital payments in India are about to get a major glow-up! To make payments smoother, safer, and way more user-friendly was the theme of almost all payments fintechs at GFF! The exhibition area was like a bustling fintech bazaar. I lost count of how many stalls there were, but each one was showcasing cutting-edge products and services. It was great to chat with the exhibitors and get hands-on with their tech. I might have geeked out a little (okay, a lot) at some of the demos. The innovation on display was truly inspiring! The networking opportunities were insane. I chatted with everyone from startup founders to big-time investors to my friends in the same space. It was amazing to have so many brilliant minds in one place, all passionate about the future of finance. The cherry on top? Prime Minister Modi's keynote address! He talked about India's fintech revolution and how it's changing the game for financial inclusion. Did you know there's a ₹1 lakh crore R&D corpus for fintech innovation? Mind. Blown. It really drove home how serious India is about leading in this space. This year's theme was also about using tech to solve problems in agriculture. There was even a hackathon focused on empowering farmers and boosting agricultural productivity. It's amazing to see how fintech can make a real difference beyond just urban areas. All in all, GFF 2024 was an incredible experience. It really drove home how fintech is changing the game, not just in payments, finance, Regulations, KYC but in areas like agriculture too. Wow, what an incredible experience at the Global Fintech Fest 2024! The sheer scale of the event this year, with 80,000+ fintech enthusiasts, was awe-inspiring. It's clear that the future of finance is digital, inclusive, and powered by innovation. Witnessing Prime Minister Narendra Modi's address was a true highlight. His emphasis on fintech's role in democratizing financial services resonated deeply. It's heartening to see how India's fintech landscape is thriving, bridging the gap between urban and rural areas, and making financial inclusion a reality. This was my third year at #GFF, and each time I'm blown away by the industry's progress. The insights shared, the new markets explored, and the innovative solutions showcased are truly remarkable. One announcement that particularly caught my attention was #RuPay's launch of Tap and Pay via mobile, along with the upcoming One RuPay credit card. These advancements in contactless payments will undoubtedly make transactions even smoother and more convenient for millions. Of course, no #GFF experience is complete without the fantastic networking opportunities. The mixers organized by Fintech Fusion India, WeWork India, and The The Indian Startup Community were a fantastic way to connect with CXOs, founders, and operators shaping the fintech landscape. Building for the next decade in Fintech I’ve seen the last 10 years, partly with banks (ICICI, Kotak, and Bank of America), and since 2019, I’ve been actively involved in building the fintech ecosystem with TFM. It has always been a great experience participating in the Singapore FinTech Festival and this edition, #SFF2023, was no different. As expected, the impact of #AI & its use cases in fin-tech / BFSI was the prevailing theme, with many industry leaders predicting this wave of technology to be more revolutionary and game-changing for mankind than any other wave before. Because, this time, AI is disrupting the disruptors. #Payments, which has potentially seen the highest innovation since the beginning of fin-tech, still continue to be a key focus area for the entire ecosystem, given the sheer impact it has on day-to-day lives. Key themes include instant payments, cross-border payments, embedded payments, interoperability of payments, and Digital Public Infrastructure (DPI). Within DPI, India stack and #UPI shine bright as a massive success story, with many countries/regulators/private organizations/VCs wanting to emulate India's proprietary payments stack and the businesses built on top of it. NPCI has walked a fine line here in setting up the infra itself but letting the ecosystem (traditional & fintech) build business use cases on top of it. They again reiterated at the event that their competition is cash, not the likes of Visa and Mastercard. Just wrapped up an incredible 3-day experience at the Global Fintech Fest 2024 at the Jio World Convention Centre, Mumbai! Being part of this event with some of the brightest minds in fintech from around the world was nothing short of inspiring. There were a lot of topics with key discussions focused on: 1. How AI and ML are rapidly transforming fintech globally. From improving operational efficiencies to enhancing customer experiences, these technologies are shaping the future of the industry. It’s exciting to see how fintech is integrating deeper into our everyday lives, with embedded finance opening up new possibilities. 2. Digital lending and consumer data protection With more financial services going digital, safeguarding consumer trust is crucial. I left with a new appreciation for the innovative security solutions being developed to meet these challenges. 3. Another highlight was exploring how - UPI in India, - Pix in Brazil, -and similar products in Africa; have been groundbreaking in making digital payments more accessible. These success stories emphasize how fintech can drive financial inclusion across different geographies. 4. Anti-money laundering (AML) As organizations around the world are increasingly working together to combat this challenge. It was eye-opening to hear about the advanced tools and strategies being employed globally to prevent financial crime. 5. Inclusivity in fintech Ensuring that financial services are accessible to everyone, regardless of location or socio-economic background, is essential for a more equitable world. The event emphasized the need for global collaboration, especially between India and other countries, to enhance the global fintech ecosystem. 6. Finally, the discussions on cross-border payments were particularly enlightening. As the world becomes increasingly connected, seamless international payments are breaking down barriers for businesses and individuals alike. Joined by figures like: 1. Hon. Prime Minister Sh. How do fintech companies build and maintain consumer trust in the face of increasing risk and abuse? I really wish I could crystal gaze or come up with silver bullets. The fintech community would be the one with the insights on what they have succeeded in gaining the trust and love of the consumers. Let me try and answer it differently and share a very non-technical answer to this important question. I share two core beliefs Trust is the foundation of payments as much as for other significant aspects of our daily to daily life. People change, protocols change, technologies evolve and get disrupted but TRUST is the connective tissue that binds us all- our brand, our consumers, partners and regulators. I also believe that Risk is a short name for business opportunties. The best risk managers are product managers and CEOs cos they are adept at scaling and scoping their product and vision in addition to reclaiberating the controls all the while.   Having said that, I want to underline the other common component of Payments in addition to TRUST. It is PEOPLE. PEOPLE MATTER- every person is different, have differentiated needs and objectives . The beginning of any journey for fintechs to build and maintain consumer trust in my view include some of the following components viz. 1. Obsess with your customers – Do everything to protect their data and your assets . The two are not divergent nor conflict. 2. Lead courageously - build a culture where there is awareness that consumer is more than a credential , a number for us, where our teams empathize with the needs and exceptions that may cause grief and anguish for the consumer. Be Bold in adopting the regulations from a conservative lens and not always a creative lens. 3. Keep it Simple and Straight – Continue engaging with the customer. The consumer does not understand the complexities of rules, technologies etc but creating awareness in his mind on who she can reach out to in case he needs help, Make your messaging simple. 4. Leverage Standards —Standards like PCIDSS, EMVCo are time tested methods to keep oneself and our consumers secure. Some of you display the PCIDSS compliance as a seal of trust in your app or on your website.  5. Data is the key – Devalue, harness, Protect Data. Besides data,- Empower people- partners, consumers, stakeholders. 6. Payments is team sport – hire diverse talent, look at things from not only a vertical and classical fraud perspective but horizontal perspective – connecting the dots – I will give you an interesting example - your risk teams and finance teams connecting to reconcile cloud partner billing may help you identify potential hacks/breaches. In conlusion, let me summarise it in a 4 Ps construct– Remember it’s about Protect, Partner, Prioriize and last but not the least, it’s about People.
