#XLBully owners should be ready for new restrictions from 31 December. From then, they must be kept on a lead and muzzled in public. It will also be illegal to breed, sell, advertise, gift, exchange and abandon these dogs, or let them stray. If you wish to keep your XL Bully, you must apply for an exemption certificate before the ban comes into effect on 1 February 2024. You only need to do this if your dog is an XL Bully breed type. Senior Veterinary Surgeon at LINGFIELD EQUINE LTD. British Equine Veterinary Association Junior Vice President and Chair of Ethics and Welfare
This is beyond horrendous. There is no doubt appropriateness of homes and training and control of aggressive dogs must be dealt with in some way. This policy is not far from the mindset of genocide. It doesn’t work to eradicate a cultural race; and it won’t work to eradicate a breed. This kind of policy would never pass for human behaviour - yet human behaviour is intricately linked, and ignored, in this issue. Just because we can 100% does not mean we should. Usually this applies for scientific or medical advances that question our ethics. In this case I use it to refer to the barbaric policy approach. I feel for everyone of my small animal colleagues, owners of kind well trained dogs, and those in the Charities sector who are taking the entire brunt of the politicians ill thought out and poorly executed ideas. The moral stress and emotional toll it puts these people through is unacceptable when you recognise that it doesn’t even form a solution to the problem. I’ve watched dog attacks through the media with horror. I’ve experienced being bitten by a dog. I would never wish this on anyone; but mandatory euthanasia or life in captivity are unacceptable ‘solutions’. Perhaps the policy makers have failed to actually identify the problems they need to solve in the first place? Devastated.

Frustrated to see this picture! I'd like to recommend a jar, a little scoop, and a home dog poo composting system... How to pick up the goods Poop on the lawn? Use a scoop (a gutter scoop from a hardware store works a treat). Poop on a walk? I use a jar, a little scoop, and a reusable sandwich bag to contain the scoop. How to dispose of the goods DIY a dog poo compost at home using this video: https://lnkd.in/dPqMe9eY which walks you through how to make one yourself. All you need is a bucket/tub and some tools! P.S. More sustainable dog tips here: https://lnkd.in/dc_tMyUQ
How hard is it to break an existing habit? Apparently for dog walkers in my local reserve it’s exceedingly difficult. My council decided to remove rubbish bins in my local park as a cost saving measure. Some six months on dog walkers are still leaving their dog poo bags where the bin used to be. I have been watching this with interest as I thought over time people would adapt and walk up the hill the extra 50 metres to use the other bin in the park or just take it home. But no people continue to leave the dog poo in the location of the old bin. Is it a silent protest I wonder? Or laziness? Yet clearly they are motivated enough to pick up their dog poo and bag it. What would you do to change these people’s behaviour? We know that people are less likely to litter if the area is clean of litter, but that might just encourage the behaviour as people know it will be removed. Do we need a sign saying no littering? Or would a sign saying dog poo bin up the hill with an arrow and then some footsteps painted into the concrete pointing up the hill work? Morale of the story just providing or in this case taking away infrastructure isn’t enough to get people to change existing habits. #behaviourchange
