Check out our new article on airships! This is an exciting field that has enormous potential as we transition the air industry away from fossil fuels. Small excerpt below: In 1935, Alexander Klemin, a lawyer and former Dean of the NYU Guggenheim School of Aeronautics, wrote in the Air Law Review that the “American airship history has been a series of disasters followed by Congressional investigation.” Two years before this statement, the USS Akron crashed off of the coast of New Jersey — resulting in the largest loss of life of any airship disaster. Two years after that statement, it wasn’t an American airship — but a German one — that had the most memorable disaster, when the Hindenburg crashed near Lakehurst, New Jersey. These disasters cemented a view that airships were dangerous. Before airships fell out of use, however, they had been seen as a luxurious and efficient mode of transportation. Today, there is a world-wide renaissance in the airship industry, featuring start-up companies re-commercializing this technology, driven by concerns with the air industry’s impact on climate and the unique use cases for the airship. Collis P. Huntington, the American industrialist and one of the four great railway tycoons of his era, founded Newport News Shipbuilding & Drydock Company in an effort at vertical integration: coal, railroad, and shipbuilding. His famous quote , engraved in stone and placed at the shipyard gates was “We shall build good ships here. At a profit—if we can. At a loss—if we must. But always good ships.” That quaint idea has been lost by the lesser billionaires and CEOs of our day, who’s sole purpose is profit for the shareholders; Boeing and General Electric being prime examples. Oh how the mighty have fallen. We need to get back to Huntington’s mission statement where the profits come for a well run company who’s main purpose is to build or design the thing they do, better than anyone else.

So in this article the argument is that the US Navy should return to a modified version of the "around-the-clock" production schedule used during World War II to increase shipyard productivity in the short term. The author proposes an 8-4-2-10 schedule, which would involve two 10-hour shifts working four days on and four days off. This would allow for nearly around-the-clock production while still giving workers four days off per week. The author acknowledges the challenges of implementing such a plan, including the cost, the need for changes to management structures, and the potential impact on workers' families. Did you know? 💡📖 The Transcontinental Railroad, completed in 1869, forever altered the landscape of the United States. Connecting the East and West coasts for the first time, this monumental feat of engineering transformed travel, trade, and the nation's destiny. In 1862, the Pacific Railroad Act chartered the Central Pacific and the Union Pacific Railroad Companies, tasking them with building a transcontinental railroad that would link the United States from east to west. The two companies would race toward each other from Sacramento, California on the one side to Omaha, Nebraska on the other. Over the next seven years, workers would face dangerous elements, rugged terrain, and deadly risks in the Wild West. Their progress culminated in Promontory, Utah, on May 10, 1869, as the two sides finally met. In front of a crowd of workers and dignitaries, the final spike was driven linking the Central Pacific and Union Pacific in the “Golden Spike Ceremony.” This amazing engineering accomplishment helped to transform the American West, opening up a huge part of the country to easier travel, trade, and settlement. #didyouknow #engineeringhistory #railroad

The American Planning Association published an article this summer on how planners might perform futuristic thinking. Ponder, what are the necessary innovations we need to overcome current past-paradigm-centric policies and practices that are correlated to the housing production challenges being faced by communities, nationwide. Read the APA article, and contemplate, what have they likely gotten correctly, what have they not imagined but might want to consider? Please leave a comment. I'd like to reach the future faster, by bringing the best ideas for developing future ready neighborhoods. Great ideas need (metaphorically-speaking) bridges to cross over the chasm of inability to be realized (their valley of death). Great ideas need nurtured to become paradigm-shifting innovations. Innovations need to be put into policy and practice to support commercialization and be made the new common practice. We need to "Future Reach" to succeed at making the best places for our maritime makers, our increasingly-higher-technology-employing manufacturing, but predominantly and log-term-dependent upon people for doing the skillful work we need. Our sector, industry, needs the best of places for our fellow citizens we depend upon to produce our Navy's ships sea power arsenal, our machines of deterrence, our peace and prosperity protectors, our vessels of defense for commercial freedom on global seas and oceans and for liberty here at home. Aerospace defense company Bell Textron Inc. appears closer to receiving state incentives for a $429 million advanced manufacturing plant it is considering locating in far north Fort Worth. The project would be $272 million in manufacturing equipment and $157 million in real estate. Bell is proposing to expand the building by 5,400 square feet. The project could create up to 411 jobs with an average annual salary of $85,000. Now, the governor’s office has 30 days to decide whether to recommend the application. If all sides reach an agreement, it would go up for another vote by Northwest ISD trustees. Bell is also seeking almost $2.7 million in Texas Enterprise Fund grants and has been offered a $1 million grant from the City of Fort Worth for the new plant. Bell is considering investing an estimated $429 million into a plant to manufacture components of its newest attack helicopter for the U.S. Army, the V-280 Valor, said Brian Chase, Bell’s vice president for international government affairs. Bell, headquartered in Fort Worth, is considering locating the plant in a 447,373-square-foot building at 15100 N. Beach St. That's near Alliance in far north Fort Worth and used to be occupied by Stanley Black & Decker Tooling, according to the application. Bell was awarded a massive contract to provide the U.S. Army with its next generation attack helicopter, known as Future Long Range Assault Aircraft, which will eventually replace the Sikorsky UH-60 Black Hawk. The V-280 has a tilt-rotor design, meaning it can take off like a helicopter and fly like a turboprop aircraft, making it faster than a traditional helicopter.
