I don't know how I missed that ŌURA is suing Ultrahuman, considering this article was from Nov 2023. I have to say at CES this year I saw at least 10 interesting smart rings. Half of them new to the market. It is going to be a battle royale for smart ring dominance with Oura having a strong lead. I'd have to say the challenge now is for each new wearable company to offer something novel. For example, when I saw Ultrahuman was adding the ring I was very curious to see if/how they were going to connect CGM data with sleep and HRV data. We don't have good research on that yet and we need it. Now that it is becoming easier to gather health data, we need to figure out how to use it to improve outcomes. Even after we do, data alone does NOT change behavior. So, all these cool insights will just be for us health geeks to talk about unless we figure how to apply it prevent the tsunami of chronic disease that is rising globally. It has to be a three-phase program: 1 - Gather data (we have enough tools for this now unless you come up with something really new) 2 - Aggregate and understand what the data means (what we really need now) 3 - Create a new science of longevity and apply the data to improve Healthspan (early-stage research going on) If you are looking to get into the longevity industry, I suggest you enter at phase 2 or even 3 (if you can build a runway) as phase 1 is getting crowded. #wearabletechnology #smartring #longevity #wellnessindustry #healthandwellbeing #businessadvice #wearabletech #healthspan https://lnkd.in/dryEKZ6T

While digital health was a star at Consumer Technology Association's show (CES) in Las Vegas and we marvel at these advancements, a crucial question must be asked - just because we can build it, should we? Here are a few key trends in digital health that we found interesting:  1. AI. As predicted, AI stole the spotlight highlighting that artificial intelligence in digital health is not just a trend, but a paradigm shift. AI-driven applications were featured in everything from diagnostics to personalized treatment plans.  2. Wearable Health Tech. Wearables are not just tracking steps anymore! CES unveiled wearables that monitor vital signs, analyze sleep patterns, and even provide early warnings for potential health issues. It's like having a personal health assistant on your wrist - or even attached to your baby's foot or diaper!  3. Sleep Revolution. Advanced sleep monitoring devices and other smart sleep solutions are redefining our understanding of the important role of rest. Our top pick? A sleep device using photobiomodulation to prevent snoring and promising better sleep.  4. Women's Health. While tracking apps for menopause and perimenopause were abundant, the solutions seemed scarce. A notable gap worth exploring further. We would be remiss to not acknowledge the pitfalls in technology for consumer marketing. For example, inaccurate health tracking devices or overreliance on AI diagnoses can result in the consumer making misguided decisions based on inaccurate information. Additionally, concerns about privacy, especially when sensitive health information may be mishandled, could erode consumer trust. So what is a key ingredient in marrying digital health with meeting consumer need? To make sure that technology enhances, not detracts, from the consumer experience so that these innovations become more than gadgets and that they empower individuals to take control of their health journey from diagnosis to treatment. #ces2024 #consumerhealth #innovation #digitalhealth

Good question posed by my SBL team! Should we track different components of our health just because we can? While I personally love the idea of being able to better track my health, I can see it becoming a mini obsession. I already immediately check my electronic health record after my doctor visits and then start googling away to understand the results. Then I nervously await my doctor's call to put the different pieces together. Like most of us, when I was a new Mom, I kept a close eye on my baby to see if anything seemed off....a slight cough, a change in bowel movements, sleeping more than usual....Would this new health tech actually have helped ease my mind or would it have just caused me to get worked up over something that's probably just normal? With so many cool trackers available soon, it will be important for each of us to decide what is worth tracking and how we will leverage that information. Ideally, tracking will give us understandable insights and peace of mind, rather than incomplete information and new anxieties.

With the rise of consumer health wearables, HRV (Heart Rate Variability) has become a popular metric that can give insights into stress, fitness, and overall health. When I first was learning about it, the fact that higher meant better was counter-intuitive to me. So, here's how I like to think about it (in a truly oversimplistic way). Imagine your heartbeat as a rhythm: • A stressed heart? Boring metronome (tick-tock, tick-tock). • A healthy heart? Jazzy improvisation (tick...tock..tick...tock). HRV measures the rhythm (not the speed), and is actually intricately connected to the nervous system, particularly the autonomic nervous system. It's said to be an indicator of the balance between the two sides of that system: “fight or flight” and “rest and digest” (personally, I need more "rest and digest"). There's no universal "good" HRV number because it varies greatly among individuals based on factors like age, gender, fitness level (thank goodness, because super-athlete Steven Csorba told me what his was today and let's just say that his number blows mine out of the water). Generally speaking, though, a higher HRV is generally considered a positive indicator of good health and fitness. It suggests: ➡ Greater cardiovascular efficiency and adaptability ➡ Better resilience to stress ➡ More balanced autonomic nervous system function ➡ Activation of the "rest and digest" parasympathetic system Now, here's where it gets exciting for me. Breathwork has been shown in the literature to have a positive effect on HRV. So, I've been doing daily 15-min breathwork sessions with our new #Breth wearable for the past 6 weeks and (drumroll, please) my HRV stats on my WHOOP went up by 11% on average! I'm pretty excited to continue this journey to better health and more "rest and digest".
