More brands are reconsidering their presence on X (formerly Twitter) and wondering if Threads will work for their business. Well, wonder no more. “The content that’s working is conversation starters. We see a lot more engagement on Threads on content that’s a conversation starter. We are prompting people to respond, and we want people to respond.” Conversation prompts, which invite users to share their own thoughts and perspectives on a topic, have been a common engagement tactic on every social app. As such, it stands to reason that they would work on Threads as well, though Meta has also made a point of actively working to facilitate more positive engagement on Threads, which puts a slightly different spin on this aspect. The harsh truth about new social media platforms is their lack of moderation. With Threads recently launching in the European Union, brands are jumping at the opportunity to get in first with the next big thing. And while it's good to be present and start building community for your business, it won't be a core platform for some time. The problem, as summarised in this screengrabbed 'suggested post' from Hank Green, is that much of Threads' content to date is aggressively polarising, and even the suggested posts in users feeds focus on 'rage baiting'. Posts that Threads 'suggested' to me via Instagram so far include: - "It's crazy how Instagram slowly socially programmed their users to not want to post due to the low reach they were giving people." - "Threads promotes itself with posts that are just as toxic as Twitter today." - "Dear Threads, enough with the homophobic, transphobic and hateful comments and accounts!!!" Threads appears to be trash talking itself before it even gets started. I've previously shared my experience about the launch of YouTube Shorts, where I received daily hate comments on my content, including teenagers repeatedly telling me to kill myself. Unfortunately the same is true for many friends and colleagues in minority communities, each time they join new platforms. I hoped for a stronger launch from Meta, based on how much they've been challenged in recent years on the topic of user's mental wellbeing. But I have faith the platform will mature in time, as they always do. For now, I recommend brands get involved and start playing. Enjoy the opportunity to be more unfiltered and direct than on other social media platforms. But if these are the suggested posts in users' feeds, don't expect too much in return from Threads just yet. #growthmarketing #threads #meta #socialmedia

INSTAGRAM KAPUT? TIME TO RETHINK STRATEGY! So, yesterday was chaos in the Meta world. There I was, scrolling through Instagram, and bam, nothing loads. Classic, right? There were 1000s of memes, led by Elon Musk himself! 😅 Thought it was my sketchy internet at first. Did the whole tech-support dance—off, on, off, you name it. Took me a solid 10 minutes to figure out it was their servers, not mine! But here’s the kicker: it got me thinking... A ton of us out there are rocking it to get business leads and market solely on Facebook and Instagram, which is cool, until it’s not! What if, in some wild twist, Instagram changes hands?  Long shot, but if it can happen with Twitter, it can happen with Meta – but who gets the most affected – your main hustle, which is on the line with no more leads or business coming in! Suddenly, the platform you knew is playing by someone else's rules. Here’s a tip: Don’t put all your eggs in one basket. Build your own spaceship, er, funnel, and source your own organic and paid leads, outside of Meta as well. These are yours and yours alone, and totally under your control, and won’t leave you stranded in the void if Instagram decides to take a left turn into crazy town! All I'm saying is, let’s not wait around to find out! Start building your own online presence, stop only using one/two platforms to market yourself. Think of it as your financial escape pod. As Meta develops Threads its interesting to see how it is building it and what it is trying to do to differentiate it given that it has the advantage of being able to look at what has happened on other platforms. Still early days, but an interesting update on a few of things they are doing from Social Media Today. The highlights: 1. The content that’s working are conversation starters, and Meta is prompting people to respond. 2. Re-posts don’t get the same amplification on Threads as they do on Twitter and elsewhere, serving as a way to drive and direct user action rather than redistribution. 3. Threads is using Instagram engagement as an indicator to identify the type of content that users want to see on Threads. 4. Threads is looking to optimise each user’s feed with the info that its algorithm permits.
