Volkswagen has made a $2 billion bet that rural Americans will fall in love with electric drive. Its formula: Resurrect a rugged, iconic U.S. brand, Scout, and court Republican state leaders, who provided a generous incentives package. "EV advocates believe political leaders, especially in red states such as South Carolina, face a choice that will be critical to the future of electric vehicles in the United States." “Policymakers must choose,” said Stan Cross, electric transportation director for the Southern Alliance for Clean Energy. “Do they want their states and our nation to lead in the expanding global EV market? EARLY ELECTRIC CAR HISTORY In an interesting twist to the past, we observe how even the visionary Thomas Edison (seen in front of the vehicle in the image) shared a close friendship with Henry Ford, although their beliefs about the future of mobility differed significantly. While Edison championed electricity as the dominant driving force, endorsing this technology from its early days, Ford leaned towards internal combustion engines. One brand that captured Edison's preference was Bailey & Co., based in Amesbury, Massachusetts. This company stood out by incorporating batteries developed by Edison into their products, providing an impressive range of nearly 160 km on a single charge. This milestone in the 1910s was illustrated at a promotional event where Bailey used two of its electric cars to participate in a demanding 1600 km round-trip endurance race between New York and New Hampshire. Surprisingly, they competed on equal terms against vehicles powered by internal combustion engines. Despite the outstanding performance of electric cars, the Bailey & Co. firm eventually disappeared in 1915, marking a turning point in the history of electric automobiles. Did you know the first "successful electric car made its debut around 1890 thanks to William Morrison, a chemist who lived in Des Moines, Iowa. His six-passenger vehicle capable of a top speed of 14 miles per hour was little more than an electrified wagon, but it helped spark interest in electric vehicles."? WOW! Now we have EVs that go from 0-60 mph in less than 60 SECONDS. How far we've come (affordability, mainstream adoption, options, and more)... and how far we still have to go (continued adoption, equitable accessibility, infrastructure, and more). As usual, a thoughtful and balanced perspective from James May. Ultimately, I'd come down a little less critically on the viability of batteries as an energy store.   Like James May, I have a Tesla Model S, in which I've now covered over 100,000 miles in four-and-a-bit years. I don’t use another car. I do a 300 mile (each way) trip most weeks that needs a mid-journey charge - but me eating breakfast takes the same amount of time. I've done four trans-European road trips and a few to the far north west of Scotland from the far south east of England with a single day record of 820 miles in the day. For me, the only time the car starts to feel a bit less than optimal is when I’ve needed to do more than twice its range – because then, you have to charge to 90% or more at mid-journey and then it takes a longer time. That’s been 4 times in 100,000 miles, and a more modern car with a higher voltage architecture will charge significantly faster.  By every other measure, it makes every other car I’ve ever had look incompetent and primitive. https://lnkd.in/eYD3Xzk4
