From March 15-May 31, we're partnering with the Cape Henry Audubon Society in asking you to turn off or block as many external and internal lights as possible at your home or business from 11 p.m.-6 a.m. to protect migratory birds! 🪿 Hampton Roads lies directly along the Atlantic Flyway used by millions of birds every year to migrate north in the spring, with the Chesapeake Bay being a major stopover point. Most birds fly at night, and as they pass through urban areas like Hampton Roads, they can become disoriented by bright artificial lights, causing them to collide with buildings or windows. To make a difference, you can do something as simple as reminding employees to flip the switch on the way out of the office or your family before bed, especially on upper floors. If you're able, close curtains or blinds and turn off exterior decorative lighting while you sleep. The Salt Lake Climbers Alliance echoes the Access Fund’s plea! We need your help to stop the National Park Service and U.S. Forest Service from implementing a new policy that could erase America’s most iconic climbing routes, including historic routes here in the Wasatch, and put our safety at risk. New draft policies from the federal agencies would classify fixed anchors as “prohibited installations” in wilderness areas. This new classification would apply to both new and existing anchors. Existing fixed anchors and fixed equipment may be retained pending completion of a Minimum Requirements Analysis, as funding and resources allow. The U.S. Forest Service also proposes restricting the establishment of new routes to "existing climbing opportunities" on non-wilderness lands. Supporting and protecting our natural spaces is now more important than ever. As we are experiencing scorching temperatures all over the world, it is essential to preserve and protect those unique ecosystems not just because they are "pretty" or "nice". (And yes, that's important too.) A lot of those places are actual essential for ecosystem preservation for both animal and plant species that we so desperately need for our own survival as a species. The more diverse an ecosystem is, the more resilient it is and the more chances we have to thrive as humans. It's all connected (even when you think it isn't). Search the closest NP or state park, go out there (weather allowing) and experience it!
