Unluckily, we are daily exposed to so-called facts and charts that affect our cognition. As a Philologist, it saddens me that charts like these are spreading misinformation by not taking into account real data. This can be partially because of diverse reasons. > 🌐 Do we only care about obtaining accurate information of large - or rather global - Languages? By doing so we are alienating large amounts of people that do speak not so minor languages. To us, they might be just numbers because of how far or invisible they are from our point of view, but on the other side of the globe there are hundreds of millions of people, and they matter as much as you do. If you see that a language has 50 million speakers, that is quite a lot! Take into account that the average person will never hold a conversation with more than 10.000 people in their lifetime. > 🌐 How does one count how many people speak a language? Clearly not by just counting a coutry's population. People are very diverse, and not necessarily does every citizen speak the region's official language. Institutions are key in order to obtain proper accountable data. But it is also necessary to be aware of political and social matters. Are we meant to believe that the numbers portayed for Italian, Japanese, Korean, Swahili and Turkish are real? Why does this graph portray so few Second-Language learners for those languages? Is this graph not aware that many people are interested in them and perhaps look for unorthodox ways to learn a language? I've had friends that have learned a language through Youtube videos, Duolingo or language exchange sites. > 🌐 Quoting sources! You might quote a person or a business, but for this graph to actually be relevant make sure to check if they have published any procedure followed for this picture's elaboration and what institutions or academic papers have they used in order to obtain such data. Procedures are important! Not all procedures will arrive to the same response. e.g. AI is very useful for obtaining general data or generating procedural information, yet it does not yet have a grasp of the real world, just documents and information has been fed purposefully, therefore it might be useful but not for this task. Use common sense! Obtain critical thought! That is the only way one can develop important abilities in order to grow as an individual. Do not believe every single chart you see or post you read. Most things on the net have a political background, and as a society it is a priority to understand that.

I'm always fascinated by this type of data. As someone who appreciates different cultures and languages, it's interesting to see how historical and social events have shaped the language landscape. Factors such as the language of science and technology, the impact of business, colonization, and the official language needs of multilingual countries all have an impact. It's particularly fascinating to look at the languages spoken most as second languages, as it provides insight into the influence of these factors.
