Already in 2024, 5 state paid family leave programs have gone into effect. That's in addition to the 18 leave programs that are already in effect. The leave landscape continues to get more complex with each new state leave program, for both the employer and the employee. Without guidance, the gap between what's available and what's utilized will continue to grow. CNN’s Jeanne Sahadi boils it down best in her latest article on paid family leave - https://lnkd.in/gy4iGx_t My experience in Australia showed massive societal and employer benefits of government-funded family leave. It fuels the gig economy (skilled professionals like me fill maternity leave contracts for awesome people like Yumeko Sahely) while protecting employee's jobs for 12 months. The US lacks such a system, forcing parents to navigate complex, inadequate unpaid leave programs, and many are not in financial position to use unpaid leave even if it’s available. As the article notes, despite Mercer US’s research showing 75% of US companies with more than 500 employees now offer or plan to offer paid parental leave in 2024, the median is only 7 weeks, and this still leaves a huge segment of our workforce without sufficient access to paid time off. In 2023, 74% of mothers were in the workforce, yet many lack access to paid family leave. Only 27% of private sector workers have this benefit, dropping to 6% for low-income workers. This disproportionately affects low-income families and women of color. Coming off the heels of celebrating great progress during #womenshistorymonth, there’s still so much to be done to bring into modern times the laws and employee benefits needed to effectively support working mothers and families. Today there are still only 13 states with mandatory paid family leave policies. While many employers are offering this benefit when not required, this should not be the standard in 2024 when we pride ourselves as a country on #genderequality and closing the talent gap in #diversity and #equity initiatives. Parental leave is a complicated affair. Unpaid leave excludes working-class families from taking full advantage, and I’ve seen small businesses almost go bankrupt through generous paid leave policies when multiple employees happened to get pregnant at the same time. Is unpaid leave good (and fair) enough? Not really. Can you expect employees to take other people’s pregnancies into consideration when starting a family? Of course not. I honestly think it’s time we stopped looking at parental support as a one-size-fits-all approach. Instead, companies should seriously look at what they can afford and aim to provide the best benefits they can – adjusting as they grow and being fully transparent about it all. The legal requirement should be seen as the bare minimum that employers should improve on as much as they can afford – because right now, I see far too many small businesses pushing themselves beyond their limits to do right by their teams and far too many big ones offering very little beyond what they’re legally obligated to. Either way, the end result is new parents not getting the reliable and dependable support they need – and that’s the most important thing.
