While the whole world is fighting about "where to work", the real debate and root issue is actually "HOW" we work. If we focus on this, then location becomes frictionless. Productivity, culture, engagement, and growth have the most fertile soil for take off. 🚀 As Annie Dean - Team Anywhere, Atlassian so perfectly puts it: 'Being distributed is not controversial. It's just a word that describes how almost all work gets done today: on the internet.' The real problem is not location. But that most are still relying on the old ways of collaborating: → Email inboxes overflowing with confusing email threads and mind-numbing levels of cc'ing. → Time chewed up prepping for and following up meetings. → Calendars stacked with back-to-back status meetings. → Time lags on meaningful and critical data and insights. The friction list goes on... What's the cost of working in this mode? → Time gets chewed up massively. But in lots of smaller 5-15 minute task increments. → Energy and enthusiasm gets slowly eroded by overwhelm and constant 'to doing'. → Meaningful work that moves the needle of growth gets stalled. → Effective delegation becomes clunky, frustrating, and sticky. Having successfully built a fully remote, digital-first company with 350 employees over the last decade (before it was cool!) I can say first-hand that the ONLY way to succeed with distributed teams is to fiercely focus on the "HOW" we work the piece of the puzzle. If you create strong, fortress-like structure around HOW you work, then you can flex all you like around "where" and even a bit around "when". It also exposes the size of the "support layer" that is bogging every business and employee down... Getting people back into the office to work remote with everyone who isn’t an employee sounds pretty inefficient to me. During covid, all customer-centric research, product discovery and customer advisory boards went 100% remote. Most of it still is today. Even though I miss my colleagues from time to time, the focus should no longer be on the "Where" but on the "How" of our work. Atlassian has released a report detailing their insights from 1,000 days of Distributed Work. It's interesting that they refer to it as "Distributed Work" rather than "Remote Work." This report encapsulates my views and feelings towards remote work perfectly. Consider this: ☑ According to 99% of executives, the future of work will increasingly be distributed. ☑ With broader access to talent, considering proximity to an office as a factor in hiring is utterly outdated, for sure! ☑ 92% of our employees report that Atlassians approach to work enhances their productivity. ☑ They try to comprose 'Focus time' about 30-40% of the week. These intervals should last at least 90 minutes and be dedicated to tasks that require deep thought. ☑ The vital importance of physical meetups and social events in maintaining company culture in a digital context. We've been building... Over the past 6 months, we've spoken to 50+ small-mid size companies about the remote / hybrid work challenges. There were two major trends that stood out to us. (Today, I'll only share the first to keep things relevant) 1. Small remote only companies that grew from <10 headcount into 20 to 50 headcount were facing growing pains. Specifically: - Low engagement and productivity - Low knowledge-sharing and high repetition - Low sense of belonging and purpose - First waves of attrition This generally resulted in Founders and Cofounders spending time and headspace on employee issues. Another one for the books! As we continue to see tech companies double down on #remotework it is only right to assume #RTO is DOA💀. Since Dropbox rolled out their approach to remote work, known as Virtual First, they have seen ~70% more effectiveness from their employees through more uninterrupted time to work, use of modified work schedules and being more strategic on coming together in-person for collaboration purposes.
