Aldi Announces Major Store Change That Will Take Place in 2025. If you’re a fan of Aldi but live closer to a Winn-Dixie or Harvey’s Supermarket, then you’re in luck. The discount grocery retailer purchased 400 Winn-Dixie and Harvey’s stores in August 2023, and expects to convert 50 of those stores into Aldi locations by the end of 2024, with most of them reopened and running by the end of 2025. While Aldi did purchase many stores, it does not have plans to convert all of them into Aldi locations. Given that Winn-Dixie stores are almost double the size of an average Aldi, it wouldn’t make sense to convert those locations, or at least the company is saying that for now. As of right now, Aldi has shut down one Winn-Dixie location in Lakeland, Florida, and is hoping to reopen the store as an Aldi within six months. The grocery retailer has also started conversions or is in the permit process with the following eight other locations in Florida, according to Islander News. https://lnkd.in/eGku2Mwx

Five Below plans to more than double its store count by the end of this decade. Last year, the chain opened 205 stores, a record number for the company growing its brick-and-mortar presence by 15% in just one year. In 2024, the company expects to open another record number (between 225 and 235) new stores and convert approximately 200 locations to its “Five Beyond” format. The Five Beyond store-in-store concept consists of a section inside the Five Below store that offers items above the highest $5 store price point offered throughout the rest of the store. Five Below’s average store size is about 8,500 square feet, but the chain will consider available locations for lease in a range between 8,000 and 10,000 square feet with a minimum of 55 linear feet of frontage. Its real estate people are focused primarily on open-air community and power shopping center locations with multiple national anchors and junior anchor cotenants fronted on major highways. Five Below sells items for up to $5 throughout its branded store. Its model is what the resilient “everything’s-a-dollar” store concept was for decades until a couple of years ago when inflation in the U.S. has made it nearly impossible to merchandise a store with a $1 retail price point. Five Below has become by default the new dollar store because it benefits from the disarray of today’s dollar stores. Five Below now has 1,544 stores across 43 states.

This proves once again that some aspects of #capitalism and a #freemarket always work quite well in the real world, as follows: 1) #Competition forces all players to improve. 2) Focusing on #customer needs is a good thing. 3) None of these #retailers is owned by or involved with #unions or #government. 4) The customer is always right, one way or the other. 5) People like #choices and #value, so if you provide those things, you will tend to succeed. 6) Following this formula can be quite #profitable, even in the most difficult of times. As shoppers continue to focus on value in 2024, dollar stores, discounters, quick-serve restaurants and auto aftermarket services appear to be the most aggressive expanding companies in 2024 according to a report recently released by capital markets resource Northmarq entitled “The Top 100: Tenant Expansion Trends." Dollar General committed to adding 800 new locations, O'Reilly Auto Parts —which opened more than 180 new stores in 2023—has plans to open another 200 this year and ROSS DRESS FOR LESS continues on its long-term plan to erect 700 sites that will take its store count to 2,900. Other fast-moving expanders include Burlington Stores, Inc., Chipotle Mexican Grill, Planet Fitness and Academy Sports + Outdoors. We were disappointed to learn that last year there was a massive 14 store closures a day, leading to 5,000 fewer shops now trading across the UK 🛍️ So, what strategy can retailers adopt as the year progresses to protect our High Street and prevent the store closure statistic from worsening? 💡 Diversifying through concessions and moving focus back to core offerings, seem to be two popular choices amongst retailers currently ... WHSmith have announced the roll out of 30 more Toys"R"Us concessions in their stores. Given that Toys"R"Us closed 100 'big box' retail park stores in 2018, and haven’t been seen since, it's interesting that they have now switched locations to the busy and convenient high street, bringing higher footfall and ‘bricks and clicks’ retailing 🧩 Holland & Barrett are currently extending their café concession trial where customers can order unique teas and coffees with their added vitamins, health, and wellness products ☕ If we look towards the Big 4 Grocers, we are seeing a mixture of both. Asda are using concessions to maximise return on excess space, whilst better serving a combined customer base. But, Sainsbury's have delivered better than expected profits as food sales soar with the reason being attributed to "putting food back at the heart of Sainsbury's" 🥕🍝🍰 This has got us thinking about where the future of retail lies: ▪️ Should retailers place focus on diversifying their offerings? ▪️ Should retailers stick to their core strengths, rather than trying to do it all? ▪️ Does diversifying through concessions actually allow retailers to be able to focus more on their 'core' offerings given the concession providers run the complexities of operations?
