Biglaw attorneys: How much “non-promotable” work are you doing? As someone who loved contributing to my Firms’ development activities, including the summer program, I’m conflicted about this topic. But my experience leads me to believe that unconscious bias leads to a higher number of both female associates and partners taking on additional responsibilities, such as: -summer program administration -recruiting -event planning -mentorship -well-being and DEI initiatives While all these tasks are undoubtedly crucial, the problem is that the time and effort that attorneys dedicate to them is rarely recognized or rewarded as highly as billable work. Hence the term “non-promotable” work. And the phenomenon isn’t limited to women.
