  "NO FOOD" AFRO AMERICAN URBAN COMMUNITIES        Hunger hits Black communities harder It's time to call out the unfair practices of big-money companies who think they can pick and choose who deserves access to food in our city. Enough with the exclusive "members-only" mentality and the endless hoops individuals and local organizations have to jump through just to get a bite to eat. Let's talk about Donald. Donald, who's been tirelessly working to feed the community. But instead of getting support, he's faced with endless tests and hurdles imposed by the Greater Boston Food Bank (GBFB) and Food For Free. Why should someone have to prove their worthiness to help others? It's unacceptable that well-funded organizations like GBFB and Feeding America, with over $100 million in resources, still manage to miss serving urban communities. How is it possible that those who need help the most are being overlooked? We refuse to stand by while big company’s police who gets to eat and who doesn't. Access to food should be a basic human right, not a privilege reserved for those who can jump through bureaucratic hoops or meet someone else's agenda. It's time for a change. It's time to demand accountability from these organizations and ensure that they're serving ALL communities, not just the ones that fit their criteria or agenda. We may not have a checkbook to pay employees to police their agenda, but we do have voices, and we will use them to fight for fairness and equality in food access for all Bostonians. #EndFoodDiscrimination #EqualityForAll #BostonStrong 💪🍽️

Where’s Claire?: Considering “Stages” on MLK Day On this #MLKDay, I await a long flight to another “stage” while considering when a stage is a moment in a cycle vs. a platform with an audience. Regarding the first, our stage in the #HungerFight is paradoxical. Awareness is high and proven solutions available. Yet, tens of millions are not yet food secure in the US (lots more worldwide). Dr. King’s words speak to me, “Why…hunger…in any land…at any table, when man has the resources…the know-how to provide all mankind with the basic necessities of life? There is no deficit in human resources. The deficit is in human will." Adding to the paradox is America’s will (even in this hyper-partisan moment). A recent Feeding America-sponsored poll of likely voters shows support that cuts across partisan divides—at least 70% of likely voters support more available emergency food and more and easier access to SNAP (Food Stamps). They also favor choice among more nutritious options for recipients and agree that we can’t lose focus on hunger. With winds like these at our backs, let’s make 2024 a #GetItDoneForHunger stage! The #HungerFight needs the second type of stage to do so—listening, learning and activating stages. It deserves the most powerful of stages, from the biggest (like the one I’ll soon join) to the smallest (like 1:1s with people experiencing hunger, policy makers and partners). This promises to be a year filled with travel to many of your backyards (mine too) and even beyond.
