Expect disruption at Humberside Airport soon

I was on the train from Manningtree this morning to meet a client and a group next to me on the train were discussing how much better railways are in France than in the UK based on their holiday experience. This was on a brand new train from Norwich on a service which has in recent months experienced punctuality as high as 94% on time and a “hare-fare” promotion reducing return ticket prices from East Anglia to London to as low as £18 (flexible return!!). Yes, we have some issues with rail in Britain at the moment and we can improve, but what makes us think everyone else’s railways are so much better? Some of my considerations for making international comparators more meaningful are below. It’s not exhaustive and it’s not about making the UK look good - it’s about providing context for judgements and policy choices. I undertake qualitative market reports for transport companies including providing meaningful comparisons. If this would be something that would help you, I’d love to hear from you. Bureau of Labor Statistics published a listing of jobs in #airtransportation in honor of #nationalaviationweek. Air transportation has grown into a large industry, transporting 852 million #passengers on 8.2 million scheduled #flights in 2022, as well as moving over 51 billion ton-miles of #cargo. The industry employes over 492,000 in May 2022. There were an additional 225,880 jobs in support activities for air transportation, such as #airtrafficcontrol, #airportoperations, #baggage and #cargo handling services, and #aircraftmaintenanceandrepair services. Three occupations combined made up over half of employment in air transportation: #flightattendants (106,000); #airlinepilots, #copilots, and #flightengineers (77,280); and #reservation and transportation #ticket agents and travel clerks (75,270). The largest occupations in support activities for air transportation were #aircraftmechanics and #servicetechnicians (39,660); laborers and hand #freight, stock, and material movers (17,590); and #aircraftservice attendants (13,410).https://lnkd.in/eK3ggS_q #aviationcareers

Really like this diagram to explain why flying rarely saves time compared to train for short / medium length journeys. (And you can use the train time more productively / in a more valuable way - working, socialising or reading, as in this case) A concrete example of this: I’m on my way to Glasgow. 30 minute cycle to Euston plus 15 minutes grace time/buying snacks. 15 minute cycle at far end. 5 hr on train. = 6 hr Vs: 1.5 hr to Heathrow 2 hr check in 1.25 hr flying 0.5 hr exit 1 hr to destination = 6.25 hr
