As many parts of the world are grappling with low fertility rates, we can longer afford to put off a question that gets at the heart of the liberal feminist problem: why are so many well-to-do women choosing to not have children? "The choice to not have children does not occur in a vacuum. There are many aspects to the context of this choice, including the challenge of balancing demanding careers with raising children and the difficulty in finding reliable partners during prime childbearing years. While a lot is said about improving workplace policies and facilities to enable women with children to continue participating in the formal workforce, there is a resounding silence on the role of socialization in shaping women’s decision-making." Gender inequality at work… let’s talk about “The Motherhood Penalty”. In Sep 2018, Henrik Kleven from Princeton, Camille Landais from LSE, and Jakob Egholt Søgaard from the University of Copenhagen published a paper on the impact of motherhood on the careers of women. They found that after giving birth, the pay and working hours of new mothers plunged by a third and a fifth, respectively. The study went on to find that the careers of mothers never fully recover. 10 years later, the hit to their incomes was 20% higher than the change in the father's income. Today, 84% of mothers say they face challenges returning to work after maternity leave. Society penalises women for having and raising children. Why are we letting it? Having children shouldn’t disrupt your career permanently. Being a professional and being a mother shouldn’t be at odds. They go hand in hand for most of us. Companies need to chart out a definitive path for new mothers to return to work and pick up where they left off. How do you think businesses can adapt to stop punishing mothers for having kids?

Motherhood significantly impacts women’s financial well-being, a phenomenon often referred to as the “motherhood penalty.” This penalty is largely due to women leaving the workforce, either by choice or necessity, to raise children. A new study by Columbia economist Douglas Almond, graduate student Yi Cheng, and Cecilia Machado from Fundação Getulio Vargas has highlighted that this penalty is even more severe than previously understood. Analyzing two decades of earnings and employment data from hundreds of thousands of families, the researchers found that working women’s incomes are, on average, cut in half after having children. What’s more, these earnings don’t bounce back quickly, remaining depressed for years afterward. "The mother penalty"-this article in The Economist shares the findings of a new study on how motherhood hurts careers and what impact it has on women's employment worldwide. Building on the work of Claudia Goldin, a Harvard economist who was awarded last year’s Nobel prize in economics for her research into gender inequality in the labour market, a group of academics from the London School of Economics (LSE) and Princeton University has now amassed a trove of data to measure the effect in 134 countries, home to 95% of the world’s population. The effect of motherhood on employment varies widely between countries. In the rich world, 80% of the gap between male and female labour-force participation is explained by women dropping out after the birth of their first child. The politics of young men have diverged sharply to the right, while those of young women have shifted further to the left in the last 10 years. Up until about 2014, the majority of men and women aged 18-25 identified as left wing. The Economist suggests a few reasons for this, including politicians on the right stoking young-male grievances, while many politicians on the left barely acknowledging that young men have any real problems. Disparity in the dating scene was also cited, with the increase of highly educated, professional young women not interested in relationships with men they don’t consider on their level. Thereby creating a larger number of single, grievance-filled young men. Social-media algorithms also had a role to play by hooking users with infuriating or terrifying content to make the world seem more dangerous than it is. This could mean young men constantly seeing posts about being falsely accused of rape, women leaving for more macho men and women being compulsive charters. Indiscriminate application of the “toxic masculinity” label may have also led to a perception in young men that there is something intrinsically wrong with being male. Making schools work better for under-performing boys, hiring more male teachers and having boys start a year later, were some of the suggested ways to start rectifying things. Along with better training to encourage men into work they currently shun, such as education, health and admin.
