Here’s why you need a wine decanter A decanter is a glass vessel in which wine is transferred from its glass bottle for service. Here’s how wine benefits from decanting- It helps separate sediments that collect over time in old wines. In the case of young or everyday drinking wines, it increases surface area for exposure to oxygen, releasing their wonderful flavours and aromas. If you are pouring an inexpensive wine at a party and do not want to reveal that to your guests, you can simply pour it in a decanter and stow away the bottle. Decanters are gorgeous to look at, elevating the style quotient of your bar. There is nothing more impressive than a large format bottle as the centrepiece of the Christmas table or as a fabulous gift for a friend or colleague. "In keeping with the crazy bottles & stories for the holidays DRC - Domaine de la Romanee-Conti is arguably the best winery in the world. If measured by price, it’s in the top top top. Getting to try these wines many times over was one of the great joys of my time as a sommelier. I’ll likely never be able to experience them like that again. Thanks to very generous guests or friends who’d offer up a taste or more. To the sons of a business magnate who ordered a ‘chardonnay’ (DRC Montrachet) by going down the price side of the wine menu, hit the $10,000 and said ‘that one’ but never drank it - I did for dinner that night. One of the more amazing shares was a 1975 La Tache in a magnum. The collector let us know back in 75’ they bottled La Tache by barrel, and it was thought the lower numbers were better barrels than the higher numbers (each bottle is numbered). Probably a handful of people worldwide would know or ever need to know this annecedote. Let alone ever get to test out that theory. A lot of the times these amazing wines were ‘good,’ like really good. But every once and a while, they were otherworldly. Like how does grape juice do that?? Make the hair on the back of your neck stand up. As Ferris Buller said, “It is so choice. 🍷 Topping My Pinot Noir Barrels: A Key Step to Preserve Quality 🍇 Hey wine lovers! 🥂 Today, I want to share with you an essential practice that I follow to maintain the exquisite taste and quality of my wines. 🍷 One of the challenges that winemakers face is preventing spoilage and oxidation in their barrels. 🚫 That's why I routinely top my Pinot Noir barrels to ensure the utmost care and preservation of my precious creations. 🍇 You see, wooden barrels, although they bring unique flavors and aromas to the wine, are also porous. This means that over time, there is a natural evaporation process that occurs within the barrel. And with evaporation comes the introduction of a small amount of oxygen. ⏳ To combat this, I've made it a habit to regularly top each barrel with about a liter of wine every month. 🍾 By doing so, I ensure that the barrels remain full, minimizing the contact between the wine and the air. The ultimate wine service temperature hack 🍷 Drinking wine at its correct service temperature fully brings out its flavours and aromas. If a wine is served too warm, the alcohol in it will overpower its other aspects. If it is served too cold, then its nuanced aromas and flavours will not be able to express themselves fully. Correct service temperature for different wines: White wines: 8-12°C Red Wines: 15-18°C Sparkling wines: 6-10°C This range is just for reference, it doesn't mean that you have to stick a thermometer in your wine to bring it to its right service temperature. So here's a simple trick to remember for a hassle-free wine experience- serve your sparkling wines chilled, white wines cold and red wines cool. Pro tip: If you think your wine is too cold and its flavours aren't coming through, wrap your hands around the bowl of your glass for some time and your wine warm up a bit from the heat of your hands.
